A bastion of privateers in the service of the king, the pretty Breton city has lived for several centuries to the rhythm of the sea. Discover its history and that of its inhabitants in the museums of Saint-Malo:

  • The manor of Limoëlou, former home of Jacques Cartier, provides invaluable testimony to the life of the explorer and the daily life of the villagers and farmers of the time.
  • The Terre-Neuvas Museum pays tribute to the cod fishermen in Newfoundland, an activity that kept the city alive for many years.
  • The 39/45 memorial is installed in a former German armed forces bunker. It recounts the key episodes of the Second World War in the city of Saint-Malo (invasion, fortifications, liberation).
  • The Museum of the History of the City and the Pays Malouin occupies the castle of the Duchess Anne. Its varied collections are dedicated to French maritime history and the great figures from Saint-Malo.
  • Within the Solidor tower, the long-haul museum of the Cap Horniers retraces the history of commercial navigation by the Cape Horn route.
  • The Étoile du Roy Museum is the 3rd largest sailing ship in France. Embark on an authentic privateer ship!

On a free visit or guided tour, these museums will interest visitors of all ages.

In the heart of the bay and off the coast of the city, the forts of Saint-Malo testify to the importance of the city under the reign of Louis XIV. Built according to Vauban's plans, they ensured the defense of the privateer city of Saint-Malo and its imposing ramparts. In the extension of the fortifications, the walk on the Môle des Noires, an emblematic rocky pier of the city, offers one of the most beautiful views of the city.

Relax on the beaches of the Emerald Coast

The pretty town of Ille-et-Vilaine is also renowned for its sandy and pebble beaches, bathed by the turquoise waters of the Emerald Coast. Accessible on foot from the historic center, the beaches of Saint-Malo are ideal for lazing in the sun, building sandcastles, walking with your feet in the water or climbing the rocks. Sand yachting, funboarding, dinghy sailing, sea kayaking, rowing, surfing or stand up paddle boarding: they offer a dream setting for practicing all types of water sports, winter and summer.
