History and urbanism
Taking a walk under the city’s porticoes you’ll notice that Bologna has one of Italy’s largest historic town centres, and that below many of its medieval buildings there are still the remains of the Roman period. Bologna was also once known as “La Turrita” (the turreted), because of its 180 towers, built in medieval times, which include the two towers which are the symbol of the city, namely the Garisenda and the Asinelli. In Bologna it is also possible to visit the oldest University in the world, founded in 1088, where so many illustrious names, such as Nicolaus Copernicus, Torquato Tasso, Albrecht Dürer and Benjamin Franklin, once studied.

Take time out to visit Bologna’s historic town centre, with its towers, porticoes and buildings. Take a walk through Parco della Montagnola, Bologna’s oldest botanical garden, or the Giardini Margherita, which was inspired by the romantic gardens of England. Festivities
There’s always a good reason for having fun with friends. Firstly there are the major events such as the famous Motorshow, which takes place in early December, but also the Cosmoprof and the Children’s Book Fair which are all worth visiting. Then there are the traditional celebrations which are an absolute must! If you happen to be in Bologna in May, then you cannot miss out on the Madonna of St Luke’s descent into the city. The events celebrating Bologna’s patron, St. Petronius, on the other hand, are in the autumn. The day, which falls on 4 October, sees the blessing of the city in Piazza di Porta Ravegnana, close to the statue of the saint, and is accompanied by traditional local fare and fireworks.
