The port of Saint-Malo is one of the major economic hubs of the city. It is also an unmissable place to go on an excursion, observe the boats or simply eat a crêpe by the water!

The large areas of the port of Saint-Malo

The port is divided into 2 main areas.

The outer harbor (under the influence of the tide) concentrates passenger transport by ferries, liners and the Bas-Sablons marina site.

The 4 tidal basins are accessible by the Naye lock and host various activities:

  • freight traffic, particularly agricultural (fertilizers, animal nutrition products, wood, cereals, salt, etc.).
  • the reception of deep-sea and coastal fishing boats which supply fresh fish to the Saint-Malo market and distribute the product of their fishing throughout the region. Several professional shore fishermen also exploit the deposits of the maritime district and supply the spider crabs, whelks and shrimps that make up the excellent seafood platters to be enjoyed in the Saint-Malo restaurants.
  • Naval construction and repair companies, installed on the Jacques Cartier naval center. They can intervene at the quay, in dry docks or on the esplanade to ensure the maintenance of all types of ships that can access the port basins.

Saint-Malo marina

The corsair city of Saint-Malo is renowned for its marinas offering appreciable proximity to the most beautiful navigation sites of the Emerald Coast.

  • The Vauban marina is located under the ramparts, a stone's throw from the historic center and the forts of Saint-Malo. Access is via the Naye lock which can accommodate ships measuring up to 150 m in length.
  • The Sablons marina is located on the historic site of the city of Alet, next to one of the most beautiful beaches of Saint-Malo.

In total, the city has 75 visitor places (25 in Vauban and 50 in Sablons). The pontoons offer many services for users (water, electricity, waste oil tank, PMR gangway, PMR hoist, showers and toilets, washing machines, etc.).

Turned towards the open sea, the city offers a setting conducive to the practice of water sports. It hosts major nautical events every year:

  • The Route du Rhum, a legendary transatlantic solo race, starts from Saint-Malo every 4 years. It connects the corsair city to Pointe-à-Pitre in Guadeloupe and gives rise to great festivities. Indeed, the boats of the greatest navigators settle in the port 10 days before the start of the race and visitors flock to the city to admire them.
  • The Branle-bas de régates is a large Malouin gathering that takes place every year in August. For 4 days, boats of all classes compete on technical and coastal courses, offering a striking spectacle. Many convivial animations are organized on land for the occasion.
  • The Cézembre Grand Prix is a friendly regatta bringing together all types of light craft (kayak, stand up paddle, catamaran, dinghy, windsurfing). A single objective, to reach the island of Cézembre from La Hoguette, one of the beaches of Saint-Malo. Picnic planned on arrival.
  • The Tour de Bretagne à la voile is an emblematic race attracting participants from all over France and various European countries. The teams sail along the Breton coast for 9 days, over a total distance of 600 nautical miles. They stop in the largest ports of the region such as Lorient, Brest and of course Saint-Malo. Each passage in the corsair city is accompanied by concerts, sailing demonstrations and gourmet markets that highlight the specialties of Saint-Malo and Brittany.
