Located in southern Denmark, the town of Vejle am Fjord is one of Denmark's most popular holiday destinations, and for good reason. Vejle's excellent location made it one of Denmark's most important maritime trading cities early on. Historically, Vejle originated from a former Viking settlement and, like Horsens, Kolding, Randers, Aalborg and Marianger, is one of the oldest Danish maritime trading towns in the Danish territory of Jutland. That is why many holidaymakers are still attracted to the most important Viking Age monument in Europe, Jelling.

Top Sights Vejle

The harbour promenade of Vejle is known as a local recreation area and offers numerous restaurants, a marina, a kayak island and viewing terraces overlooking the picturesque harbour front. The harbour district near the city centre is also characterised by its award-winning architecture. The futuristic apartment complex Bølgen ("the wave") is considered the architectural landmark of the city.

For those interested in art, a detour to Fjordenhus, designed by the Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson, is also recommended at the harbour. The creator's works of art are exhibited on the ground floor and are usually open to the public.

Nearby is the student quarter Vejle Midtpunkt. From April to October each year, the neighborhood is decorated with colorful umbrellas, so that the streets shine colorfully. Midtpunkt also invites you to linger thanks to cosy restaurants, cafés and bars. Would you like to try the typical Danish Smørrebrød, a richly topped rye bread? Then you will find the traditional lunch in the local gastronomy of the shopping area.

In the evening, Vejle is particularly inviting thanks to its gastronomy as well as wine and cocktail bars. Vejle – Shopping in Denmark's cosiest pedestrian zone

Vejle has been awarded several times in recent years as the most beautiful Danish shopping city. The pedestrian zone is centrally located in the heart of the fjord city and is about 900 meters long. In addition to shopping centres such as the Paladspassage, small authentic design and specialist shops offer a unique and unforgettable shopping experience in the city centre. During a relaxed stroll, you'll discover wine shops, chocolatiers, and reasonably priced vintage shops.

The Citycenter Bryggen at the southern end of the city centre offers around 60 shops with parking facilities for relaxed shopping.

UNESCO World Heritage - The Jelling Monuments in Vejle

Are you interested in the exciting history of the Vikings in Denmark? Then a visit to the Kongernes Jelling Adventure Centre is worthwhile. Built in 965 by Viking King Harald Blauzahn, the Jelling monuments have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. The main attraction is the "baptismal font of Denmark", which was carved into one of the rune stones of Jelling and depicts the monuments next to two burial mounds and a church. In July each year, a Viking market takes place, where the interesting history of the World Heritage can be experienced in interactive exhibitions. The monuments are located about 14 km outside and can be easily reached by car or bus line 211 from Vejles city center.

Relaxing holidays in Vejle

Surrounded by contrasting nature, Vejle is also a holiday destination for a relaxing and restful time. The 22 km long Vejle Fjord with its inlet from a valley glacier and breathtaking beaches can also be explored by bike from Vejle. On a bike ride along the Vejle River, you can also reach the Viking-built bridge over Ravning Enge, the oldest bridge in the country. From the city you are almost 45 minutes on the way there.

In the Vejles City Center, the city park is a place to go for a walk and relax in the countryside. In summer, numerous cultural events take place on a stage in the park.

How to get to Aalen

Vejle can be easily reached by car, train, ferries and plane. If you arrive by car, it is best to start the journey via the A7, which leads from Hamburg via Flensburg to Denmark. Then change to the E45 to reach Vejle. Via train, there is the possibility of arriving at Vejle main station, for example from Hamburg with a change in Aarhus. If you want to arrive by plane, it is best to land at Billund Airport, 35 km away, and take bus number 43 directly to the bus station in Vejle.
