Discovering and visiting Amiens

In his Commentaries on the War of the Gauls, Julius Caesar mentioned Samarobriva, “the bridge on the Somme”, for the first time. The city, which the Via Agrippa runs through, was then only a small castrum. The name comes from the Ambiens, a Celtic tribe. Amiens experienced spectacular growth during the Middle Ages. With the rise of the textile industry, Amiens built new neighbourhoods in order to meet the demand for more housing. After being badly bombed during World War I and II, Amiens rebuilt itself based on a new city plan that included wider roads and new squares.
