1 - Mussels marinière à la malouine

This traditional Breton cuisine dish highlights bouchot mussels straight from the bay of Mont Saint-Michel. Simple and succulent, the sauce combining white wine, shallots, bay leaf, thyme, parsley, fresh cream and semi-salted butter makes the particularity of this Malouin recipe.

2-  Kouign Amann

This typical cake of the region takes its name from the Breton “kouign” (cake) and “amann” (butter). Composed of puff pastry, semi-salted butter and caramelized sugar, kouign amann is not known for its lightness! This melting and delicious pastry is prominently displayed in the windows of Saint-Malo bakers.

4 - Beurre Bordier, specialty of Saint-Malo

In the workshops of Maison Bordier, the churned butter is kneaded, salted and shaped by hand to form a collection of unique products with varied flavors. Butter with seaweed, Espelette pepper, yuzu, smoked salt or Madagascar vanilla are available for sale in the boutique located rue de l’Orme, in the heart of the old town. The Maison du Beurre also offers a discovery area on the history of butter through the ages as well as an exhibition on the tools and objects used since the 19th century. This small museum in Saint-Malo will appeal to gourmets from all walks of life!

5 - Salted butter caramels

This Breton confectionery par excellence comes in a candy version and spread on bread, brioche, crepes… or to be enjoyed with a small spoon! You will find them in all the delicatessens of the city. Salted butter caramel comes in many flavors: vanilla, rum, speculoos, coconut, etc. A comforting little sweetness to put in your suitcases as a souvenir of your visit to the corsair city of Saint-Malo.

6 - Craquelins de Saint-Malo

Crunchy under the tooth and melting in the mouth, the craquelin is a small biscuit made from wheat flour, whole fresh eggs, sugar, milk and malt extract. It has a characteristic concave shape and can be enjoyed as it is or with a sweet or savory garnish at breakfast, snack or aperitif. 

7 - Cancale oysters

Fish and seafood are an integral part of Malouin gastronomy: fishmongers and Saint-Malo markets are full of fresh products, from the day's catch. You will also find oysters and mussels from Cancale, raised in the bay of Mont Saint-Michel. A pure iodized delight!

8 - Roellinger spices

In a splendid boutique with the appearance of a pharmacy, Olivier Roellinger pays homage to the Malouin adventurers who discovered the new world. His creations concocted to enhance vegetables, meats and fish have poetic names (fairy powder, wind powder…). They appear in the Gault&Millau directory and are used by the greatest French chefs.

9 - Saint-Malo potatoes

A specialty of Saint-Malo, potatoes are small candies made from ground almonds and sugar, flavored with kirsch and rolled in cocoa powder. Beige in color, they imitate the new potatoes grown in the Malouin countryside since the 19th century. 

10 - Malouin paving stone

This very soft almond cake flavored with rum has a square shape, in reference to the paving stones that adorn the streets of the old city. It is enjoyed at Maison Galland, a pastry shop located behind the ramparts. The perfect snack after a day of swimming on the beaches of Saint-Malo!
