Urban walks

Several easy routes allow you to discover the districts of the corsair city of Saint-Malo and the surrounding villages.

  • Between the Bas-Sablons beach and the port of Solidor, a short hike of less than 2km takes you to the district of Saint-Servan, the very first Malouin agglomeration. On the circuit, you can admire numerous Gallo-Roman remains and the Solidor tower, a triple medieval keep overlooking the Rance estuary. One of the most beautiful parks of Saint-Malo (les Corbières) is located next to the point of arrival.
  • The walk on the ramparts overlooking the old town and the port of Saint-Malo forms a loop of approximately 2 km. It offers a breathtaking view of the coastline, Intra-muros and the forts of Saint-Malo and allows you to discover the emblematic monuments of the city. Several circuits are accessible to wheelchairs and strollers.
  • The walk along the Paramé dike runs along one of the most beautiful beaches of Saint-Malo. This pleasant walk of about 4 km round trip shows the superb villas of the 19th and early 20th century with eclectic architecture. Return possible through the alleys of old Saint-Malo.

GR®34 Saint-Malo circuit

The “customs officers' path” is an exclusively coastal hiking circuit. Connecting Mont Saint-Michel to the city of Saint-Nazaire, in Loire-Atlantique, it includes several routes departing from Saint-Malo.

  • The GR®34 route between Saint-Malo and Dinard is a 14.4 km route along the Rance estuary. It is a pretty loop of medium difficulty allowing you to discover many sites of interest such as the city of Alet, the port of Saint-Servan, the Rance dam and the wealthy villas of Dinard. The return to Saint-Malo is by bus all year round. In summer, a boat provides the shuttle.
  • More wild, the GR®34 circuit between Saint-Malo and Saint-Coulomb mixes discovery of historical and natural heritage. On the route, a break on Besnard Island is essential: attached to the coast by a sandbar, it shelters pretty beaches and numerous species of seabirds.

Hiking around Saint-Malo

  • North of the city, the hike of Pointe du Grouin is one of the most beautiful walks in Ille-et-Vilaine. This large loop of 15 km in the heart of nature takes you from small creeks to rocky points and offers a breathtaking panorama of the Emerald Coast. Photo enthusiasts will be delighted.
  • The hike from Port-Briac to Cancale crosses diverse landscapes (beach, village, oak forest). It offers beautiful views of the town of Cancale and the bay of Mont Saint-Michel.
  • Within a radius of 15 km around Saint-Malo, you can admire the famous Malouinières, the country houses of Malouin privateers and shipowners. These little architectural jewels, some of which are open to visitors, have sublime French gardens.

Hiking in Saint-Malo: our tips

Here are some tips to make your excursion a success and have a pleasant time:

  • Check the weather, tide times and duration of the chosen circuits so you don't get caught by surprise by the storm, the sea or nightfall.
  • Dress appropriately by favoring comfortable clothes and hiking shoes. Don't forget to take a windbreaker or a small waterproof jacket!
  • Protect yourself from the sun. Cap, sunglasses and total sunscreen are essential if you hike in sunny weather.
  • Bring a beach towel to swim in the turquoise waters of the Breton coast.
  • Respect the landscapes and environments you cross: make sure you do not leave any waste, preserve the fauna and flora, do not go off the marked paths.
