Strasbourg station: a crossroads of Europe

Strasbourg station is a key railway hub in Europe. Discover the services and connections for traveling by train from or to the capital of Alsace!

Strasbourg station: history of an exceptional monument

Inaugurated in 1883 by the German administration then governing the territory, Strasbourg station replaces the city's old terminus, too small to accommodate new railway tracks. It has a neo-Renaissance architectural style, dominating the official buildings of the German Empire. This fully electrified and heated building, offering travelers facilities of unprecedented comfort for the time, is hailed on both sides of the Rhine. Today, the former imperial transit lounges house the "long-distance travelers" lounges (first-class passengers). They retain much of their original decoration and furniture: chandeliers, armchairs, stained glass windows, marble staircase, ebony wood wall clock, and inlaid parquet flooring.

The facades are characteristic of German official buildings of the time. Those of Strasbourg station are decorated with various coats of arms: those of the city, the Reich, Alsace, and Lorraine. You can also admire superb bas-reliefs and statues made by the Berlin sculptor O. Geyer. After the return of Alsace to France, the decorations representing the integration of the region into the German Empire were either neutralized or Gallicized.

Various renovation projects of the station took place during the 20th century. Nevertheless, the most important is certainly its transformation into a multimodal exchange hub on the occasion of the arrival of the European East High-Speed Line. For the occasion, and in order not to touch the walls of the original building listed in the inventory of historical monuments since 1940, a huge glass roof was installed above the facade. It covers the passenger building along its entire length and doubles the reception area of the building. Major modernization work is undertaken to provide more services, shops, and relaxation areas to the millions of travelers who transit annually at Strasbourg central station.
