At the edge of the Black Forest, the Weisstannen turm is an unmissable monument during your visit to Strasbourg. Discover the essential information to prepare your visit!
The Weisstannen turm, or Weißtannenturm in Alemannic spelling, was built for the Franco-German flower show of 2004 in the town of Kehl, Germany. In the immediate vicinity of Strasbourg, it offers a breathtaking view of the Alsatian capital, the Vosges, the southern part of the old Rhine and the Black Forest. If the weather is clear, you can even see Strasbourg Cathedral and the European Parliament!
Erected in the year of the fir tree, the monument bears the symbolic name of "White fir tower". It is located in the middle of the Jardin des Deux Rives, an idyllic 150 ha garden with water games for all ages, pirate ships to occupy children, picnic areas, collective barbecues and themed gardens (including a sublime rose garden). With magnificent water staircases and waterfalls, this cross-border park extends between Strasbourg and Kehl and hosts many events each year during the Europe Day which takes place in May.
Fraternally linking Germany to France, the Passerelle des Deux Rives designed by Marc Mimram offers two lanes reserved for cyclists and pedestrians. On each side, works of art symbolizing Franco-German friendship are exhibited.
The Weißtannenturm is distinguished by its bold design. It rises to a height of 30 meters and is mainly made of wood and steel for a total weight of 70 tons. For the construction of its central pillar, three tree trunks from Nordrach in the Black Forest and donated by the German forestry administration were used. In order to symbolize a miniature forest, thin trunks are arranged around the load-bearing trunks.
It culminates at nearly 45 meters and totals 210 steps to reach the summit. Several levels allow for a gradual ascent while enjoying the 360° view, even for the less adventurous. On windy days, you can feel the structure move as you ascend!
Close to the city center of Strasbourg, the monument is easily accessible by car, on foot or by public transport. From Strasbourg station, the TER takes about ten minutes to reach Kehl station. You can then take the Rheinpromenade to get to the tower. From the Parc de l'Étoile, tram D takes you to the other side of the Rhine in about 35 minutes. The duration is equivalent to reach the place by car from our establishment B&B HOTEL Strasbourg Nord Artisans located north of the city. Finally, if you are in the Jardin des Deux Rives, on the French side, it will only take you 20 minutes to reach the Weißtannenturm on foot.
