A superb tribute to the sculptor Auguste Bartholdi, the Statue of Liberty in Colmar stands in the heart of the city. Discover the history of this famous Colmar monument!
The Statue of Liberty in Colmar welcomes visitors entering the city, just like its prestigious elder in New York. Measuring 12 meters high, it was sculpted as part of the centenary of the death of Auguste Bartholdi, an artist born in Colmar to whom we owe the famous American statue of "Liberty Enlightening the World".
It also symbolizes the strong link uniting the town to the United States, a link made concrete in 1986 by the twinning between Colmar and the university town of Princeton. Its realization is signed by the artists Guillaume Roche, Pascal Bigel (enlargement sculptor) and Jean-Christophe Mironneau. The statue is entirely made of resin tinted in the mass to give it the appearance of patinated copper. It is reinforced by an internal metal frame using the Gustave Eiffel process for Miss Liberty.
A constant reminder of the legacy of freedom, tolerance and openness that Bartholdi bequeathed to France and the world, the Colmar statue carries the same message as its big New York sister. From its torch, the figure of Liberty illuminates the world. In her left hand, a book symbolizes knowledge and education. Proudly erected on its pedestal, it embodies the ideal of freedom, equality but also the fight against oppression and the promise of a better world, values dear to the Colmar artist.
The Statue of Liberty was inaugurated on July 4, 2004, American National Day, by Mrs. Jacques Chirac.
Born in 1834 in Colmar, François Auguste Bartholdi is a painter, photographer and sculptor renowned for his 2 most prestigious works. "The Lion of Belfort", with its 22m long by 11 high, is the largest stone statue in France. It pays homage to the heroic resistance led by the city during the siege of the Prussians between December 1870 and February 1871.
"Miss Liberty", a gigantic 90 m high sculpture, was erected in New York Bay as a pledge of Franco-American friendship. Its Colmar replica is located on the road leading to old Colmar and to Bartholdi's birthplace which today houses a museum in his honor. There you can admire works by the artist, the original sketches of the Statue of Liberty as well as artifacts telling the story of its creation.
Located in the city center, this Colmar museum also houses family furniture and personal memorabilia.
