Deeply rooted in the history of the region, the Alsace wine route was born in the 1950s. It extends over 170 km along the foothills of the Vosges and crosses 119 villages and wine towns. Over the years, winegrowers, local communities and regional authorities have collaborated to make it an unmissable tourist and cultural route for wine lovers and novices alike. The objective of this oenological and cultural route: to promote an ancient and quality wine production, initiated by the Romans. This winding road allows you to taste some of the most famous wines of France while exploring picturesque villages, rich in history and traditions.

Taste the best Alsatian wines

Renowned for their diversity and quality, the region's vineyards produce wines from various grape varieties such as Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris or Muscat. With their citrus notes, floral, spicy or exotic aromas, they offer a unique taste experience, reflecting the talent of local producers. These exceptional wines are highlighted in the region's restaurants but also during the Colmar wine fair, an annual event attracting visitors from all over the world.

Along the wine route, most vineyards are open to visitors and many cellars warmly welcome those who wish to taste their wines. It is also an opportunity to discover the know-how of local winegrowers and learn more about their profession and their daily life. During these encounters, you will surely have the opportunity to taste special vintages such as the Vendanges Tardives or the Sélection de Grains Nobles.

  • Riquewihr is a medieval village renowned for its pretty half-timbered houses and cobbled streets.
  • Classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, Eguisheim unfolds in concentric circles around its medieval castle. Its narrow streets and colorful houses give the city a charming and timeless atmosphere.
  • Obernai is a lively small town with a pleasant and friendly central square with its many cafes with welcoming terraces.
  • Built lengthwise, Ribeauvillé is famous for the 3 castles that overlook the village: Saint-Ulrich, Girsberg and Haut-Ribeaupierre.
  • About fifteen kilometers north of Colmar, Bergheim is a true admirably preserved medieval gem.
  • The village of Kaysersberg (Haut-Rhin) was elected Favorite Village of the French in 2017. With its river and its fortified bridge, this village with crazy charm is an essential stop on the wine route.
  • In the heart of the Ballons des Vosges natural park, the town of Thann is known as the southern gateway to the Alsace wine route. Discover its exceptional historical heritage and enjoy a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding mountains!
  • The Alsace wine route is also an excellent pretext to visit old Colmar and discover all its treasures.

Alsatian gastronomy in the spotlight

This tourist route is not limited to wine tasting. It also offers a unique culinary journey to discover the best Alsatian dishes! During your trip, do not miss to taste the Colmar specialties and the region: sauerkraut, baeckeoffe, tarte flambée, kouglof and gingerbread.
