  • The Unterlinden Museum

The Unterlinden Museum is located in downtown Colmar, very close to the Pfister house (the first example of Renaissance architecture in Alsace). It occupies a former 13th-century Dominican convent. The building houses a varied collection of religious art, paintings, sculptures and art objects, covering a vast historical period. Within the museum's contemporary extension, the modern art collection preserves works by major artists such as Monet, Picasso and Dubuffet. However, its centerpiece is undoubtedly the Issenheim Altarpiece, a sculpted ensemble considered one of the masterpieces of Western art. The museum also has an underground gallery, consisting of three exhibition rooms, which passes under Place Unterlinden and the canal. And since 2020, a new route dedicated to archeology highlights collections tracing the cultural and artistic history of Alsace from Prehistory to the present day. An essential visit for all art and history lovers!
