Colmar Christmas market: one of the most beautiful in Alsace

The Colmar Christmas market is renowned throughout the region. A true celebration of Alsatian tradition, it offers visitors an unforgettable experience. Day and night, the craft and regional product stands set up in pretty chalets offer for sale and tasting a wide variety of artisanal objects and sweet and savory delicacies. It is the ideal place to stock up on original gifts to give to your loved ones! In the evening, the city lights up to create a magical decor, straight out of a fairy tale. Various events are organized throughout the period: puppet shows, open-air concerts, treasure hunts, cook shows (culinary demonstrations) by the chefs of the best restaurants in Colmar, etc.

Of course, Alsatian gastronomy and Colmar specialties occupy a prominent place in the Christmas markets. Impossible to resist the smells of gingerbread, mulled wine, chocolate and flambé tarts! It is the opportunity to taste the delicious wines and liqueurs of Alsace such as Riesling, kirsch or gewurztraminer.

Alsatian nativity scenes are also in the spotlight. Giant nativity scenes, artisanal nativity scenes created by the inhabitants, living nativity scenes, gingerbread nativity scenes, representations of the nativity line the districts of the Colmar city center to the delight of young and old!

6 different markets to discover

Each of the 6 Christmas markets of Old Colmar has its own characteristics, its decoration and its very particular atmosphere. Within each district, the small houses housing the stands are designed to highlight the surrounding heritage while integrating perfectly into the landscape. They give each market the appearance of a small village that visitors discover at their own pace, strolling according to their desires.

  • The Christmas market of the Place des Dominicains is nestled at the foot of the church of the same name. Dating from the 14th century, this sumptuous building gives the place a spiritual and historical dimension. At nightfall, its illuminated stained glass windows create a striking atmosphere!
  • Place de l'Ancienne Douane, near the main Colmar museums, the small houses are installed around the Schwendy fountain. A light show animates the facade of the Koïfhus, the oldest local public building, every evening.
  • The interior of the Koïfhus houses the Christmas market of artisans who exhibit ceramists, potters, master glassmakers, cabinetmakers, wood carvers, hatters or jewelers rigorously selected.
  • Place Jeanne d'Arc, the market is dedicated to local products, just like the gourmet market of the cathedral square, located at the foot of the Saint-Martin Collegiate Church.
  • The children's Christmas market takes place every year in the picturesque alleys of the Little Venice of Colmar. With its winding canals, its colorful and flowered half-timbered houses, the beauty of the district offers a magical setting for the events organized for the occasion: rides, giant Santa Claus mailboxes, mechanical nativity scene, etc. A must if you visit Colmar with family!

If you go there at the beginning of December, do not miss the Saint Nicholas markets. Organized in the neighboring villages, they celebrate the patron saint protector of children, usually during the first weekend of Advent. For the occasion, craft markets, equestrian shows, snacks and pony rides are organized for young and old.
