Here's a closer look at the season's must-sees!

Alsace's not-to-be-missed Christmas markets

Alsace is world-famous for its enchanting Christmas markets, set in historic settings. So many that you may not have time to visit them all... Here's a selection of Alsatian Christmas markets worth seeing this winter.

Strasbourg, capital of Christmas

Strasbourg's Christmas market is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in the world, and one of the most visited in Europe! Authenticity and craftsmanship are the watchwords of this event, which features numerous chalets dedicated to creativity. Ceramists, glassmakers, cabinetmakers, dressmakers... you'll find plenty of original gift ideas while supporting the local economy.

Kaysersberg, the medieval town

Fascinated by the medieval atmosphere? Don't miss the Christmas market in Kaysersberg, an authentic medieval town just 1 hour's drive from Strasbourg. Probably one of the most picturesque you'll ever visit! Don't hesitate to stop by in the evening to enjoy the illuminations in this village of cobbled streets and half-timbered houses, typical of the region.

Riquewihr, one of France's most beautiful villages

Riquewihr's Christmas market is an enchanting interlude in your visit to the region. And with good reason! Riquewihr is one of France's most beautiful villages. Here, too, you can gaze at pretty half-timbered houses while sipping delicious mulled wine.

Ribeauvillé, for a costumed atmosphere

Feel like celebrating? Take advantage of the many events and shows at the Ribeauvillé Christmas market. This other medieval town is well worth a visit, and will transport you straight back to the Middle Ages. Indeed, the town's inhabitants are determined to take you on a journey back in time thanks to the festive program: grandiose decorations, period costumes, dancers, troubadours, musicians... you'll be in for a real treat!

Colmar, the glittering city

For the December festivities, the whole town of Colmar lights up! This Christmas market is a must for fans of Alsatian specialities. From foie gras and sauerkraut to gingerbread, there's something for every taste bud. Like Strasbourg, Colmar is a famous Alsatian town, perfect for celebrating the magic of Christmas.

Alsatian specialities to enjoy in winter

In addition to their festivities, Christmas markets are ideal for discovering the region's culinary traditions. Along with the famous cinnamon mulled wine, here's a quick roundup of Alsatian specialities you absolutely must try! Of course, this list is by no means exhaustive. So let your taste buds be your guide, and don't hesitate to try them all!

Bredele

These are typical Alsatian Christmas cakes. Traditionally, it's the whole family who gets involved in making these cookies! Recipe secrets are handed down from generation to generation. Butter shortbread, almond Santas, cinnamon stars, jam or hazelnut fillings... the shapes and flavours are numerous. So take advantage of the Christmas market to buy an assortment and sample as many as you can!

The manalas of Saint-Nicolas

In December, these little man-shaped brioches, plain or with chocolate chips, invade Alsatian bakeries. They're a real hit with children at snack time. Enjoy them with a hot chocolate!

Berawecka

Even more original than the traditional gingerbread, Berawecka is a bread roll with dried and candied fruit macerated in brandy (kirsch, mirabelle plum or schnapps, for example). Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, but there are many variations today. A real delight!

Sauerkraut

While fermented cabbage probably originated in China, sauerkraut as we know it is a specialty of Germany and Alsace. Alsatian sauerkraut is a gourmet dish that will keep you going this winter. It's made with cabbage, of course, but also with Strasbourg sausages, smoked bacon and other cold meats, potatoes and a host of spices and herbs (bay leaves, cloves, coriander seeds).

Springerle

These little cookies are so pretty, it is almost heartbreaking to eat them! Alsatians often hang them as decorations on the Christmas tree. These real works of art are in fact little aniseed Christmas cakes decorated with embossed images.
