The Opéra de Strasbourg: a venue for the performing arts

The Strasbourg Opera House, also called the "Opéra national du Rhin" (ONR) is a regional opera house, jointly managed by three cities: Strasbourg, Mulhouse and Colmar. The building located on Place Broglie, in the historic center of the city of Strasbourg, is as well known for its remarkable architecture as for the quality of the shows that take place there. This neoclassical building dating from the 19th century, whose facade is classified as a historical monument, hosts national and international productions. Are you visiting the Strasbourg region?     What is the history of the Strasbourg Opera House?

It all began in 1701 when the city of Strasbourg had a barn converted into a theater. The Place Broglie was then called "Place du Marché aux chevaux" (Horse Market Square). Far from satisfying the demands of all spectators, the old barn was replaced by the construction of a new hall between 1804 and 1821. But over time, the place fell into disrepair and in 1853, serious restoration work began. The hall could now accommodate nearly 1,200 spectators.

Unfortunately, in 1870, a large part of the theater suffered the bombardment of the Prussian army. Only part of the facade survived the damage. The building was nevertheless rebuilt according to the old plans and again accessible to the public from 1873.

What does this well-known theater look like today?

The hall, 18 meters high, can accommodate more than 1,100 people. It consists of 4 galleries or "balconies", typical of "Italian style" theaters. If you plan to go there to attend an artistic performance, be sure to admire its ceiling!

The paintings on the ceiling of the main hall represent the arts that are practiced there: music, dance, comedy and tragedy. On either side of the stage, you may notice the proscenium boxes which, in the past, welcomed high-ranking guests.

What types of events are organized at the ONR?

The Opéra national du Rhin has acquired a leading reputation on the international opera scene. And for good reason! More than 140 opera performances, concerts, recitals, dance and shows for young audiences take place there each year. On the program: grandiose sets, renowned directors, dancers, great voices and other artists share the stage to offer the public rich and varied lyrical and musical proposals.

Alongside this, the ONR carries out awareness-raising actions for young people in lyrical and choreographic arts. For example, it offers meetings between artists and young spectators. Each season, it also undertakes cultural action projects alongside associations to promote access to musical culture for all.
