The best holiday regions in Lower Saxony
Well-known regions that characterize the state of Lower Saxony are the Weserbergland, the Lüneburg Heath, the Emsland or the East Friesland. Located in the urban triangle of Hanover, Hamburg and Bremen, the Lüneburg Heath with its comfortably grazing Heidschnucken sheep, the purple flowering heathland and the rustic juniper is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the region. In Bispingen, in the heart of the nature reserve, you can try typical heath specialties such as Heidschnuckenbraten (roasted mutton).
You can also find home-style cooking in Aurich in East Friesland. In addition to the worth seeing Stiftsmühle (monastery mill) and the Energie-Erlebnis-Zentrum (energy experience center), an important motto applies here: Eten un drinken holt Liev un Sell tosamen (eating and drinking brings body and soul together). Try the typical East Frisian Snirrtjebraa (braised pieces of pork). Cycling holidays by the sea or simply relaxing, you can also do that on Juist, one of the idyllic islands in Töwerland (magic land).
The Steinhuder Meer near Wunstorf is only 30 kilometers northwest of the Lower Saxony state capital Hanover and is also easily accessible by bus. Ice sailing is even possible in winter on the approximately 30 square kilometer water surface. Experienced hikers can discover the diversity of the holiday region on a 32-kilometer circular route around the lake.
