Are you staying in the capital for a weekend or a business trip? Be sure to visit Paris Bastille and discover the gems of this historically rich district!
Located in the 11th arrondissement of Paris, the Bastille district of Paris is one of the most emblematic of the capital. Both trendy and popular, it takes its name from a fort built in the 14th century to defend the east of Paris. Over the centuries, this fortress transformed into an arsenal and then into a prison. It housed ordinary prisoners but also many celebrities such as Montaigne, the Man in the Iron Mask, Voltaire, and Beaumarchais.
Hated by the people of Paris, the bastion was demolished in 1789, just after the French Revolution and the famous storming of the Bastille. In the 19th century, the July Column was built in the center of the square, at the request of King Louis-Philippe. The place still retains a strong political connotation today: it serves as a setting for major events and popular gatherings (concerts, marches and demonstrations).
Very popular with Parisians and passing tourists, the Bastille district has a very central location, only half an hour's walk from the Louvre Museum. It is a must-see during your stay in Paris!
Built on the site of the former prison, this famous Paris monument pays tribute to the revolutionary days of the Three Glorious Days. It was Louis-Philippe d'Orléans who initiated its construction. Reaching more than 50 m high, it bears on its shaft the names of the victims of the July 1830 revolution. It is built above a necropolis housing the bodies of the revolutionaries. At its top, you can admire a superb gilded bronze sculpture: it is the Spirit of Freedom, by Auguste Dumont. Guided tours take place every weekend to explore the crypt.
A district of artists and avant-garde, the streets of Bastille, like rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, house many art galleries.
Whether they are rather intimate or very international, they house artists with a fascinating background. Do you love crafts? Be sure to visit the Viaduc des Arts! Under its arcades, the workshops of prestigious designers (jewelers, antique dolls, painting restoration...) offer a unique vision of French know-how.
Very close to the July Column, be sure to visit the Arsenal Basin. Connecting the Seine to the Saint Martin Canal, this pretty marina was once a very active merchandise port. Starting from the Opéra Bastille, take a walk along the René Dumont greenway, an unusual route of more than 4km leading to the Bois de Vincennes. This pedestrian garden follows the railway line of the old station. It uses viaducts and tunnels to offer you a bucolic route dotted with various species, in the heart of the city.
Pizza, bistronomy, Asian cuisine or starred restaurant: to dine in the district, you will be spoiled for choice, and for all prices!
At nightfall, the Bastille bars are known for their atmosphere, from the most disheveled to the most subdued. Bistro, wine bar, DJ set in a private club or even Brazilian evening: there is something for everyone! Along rue Oberkampf, small bistros offer aperitif concerts, oenology workshops or cocktail tastings. And for a summer afterwork, go to the trendy terraces of the Arsenal Basin.
