The most famous museums in Vigo

When we travel to a city as historic as Vigo it is common for us to think about visiting some of the most famous museums to learn more about the local culture and not so local. In this Galician city, which dates back to Roman times, we find museums for almost all tastes, ranging from contemporary art, to a museum focused on human communication and another focused on the sea. Therefore, we are going to point out the six museums in Vigo that you cannot miss if you want to give your trip a more cultural and playful touch.

The 5 essential museums in Vigo

Museo-Pazo Quiñones de León

If what we want is to delve deeper into Vigo and Galician culture, we cannot miss visiting this museum that has just turned 85 years old. It is located in a 17th century pazo belonging to the Galician aristocracy. This means that only the architectural aspect already makes it attractive, but inside we will also find everything from furniture and decorative elements to clocks and textiles from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, mainly donated by Policarpo Sanz. In fact, it is considered the best museum of 20th century Galician art. Thus, we will combine the aristocratic architectural space and the exhibited works that bring us closer to this culture. Therefore, it will only be necessary to take out our tickets and enjoy a journey through time and history.

Museum of Contemporary Art (MARCO)

If we are looking for something more modern, more disruptive, MARCO is undoubtedly the museum in Vigo that we are most interested in visiting. The truth is that there are no permanent exhibitions, but we will find temporary exhibitions focused on different artistic branches, since this space also has the function of serving as a meeting point for artists in the area and to motivate students in the world of art. To make our visit more complete we can always resort to guided tours that will explain each exhibition in a didactic way and we will better understand each of the works.

Verbum Museum

Verbum is perhaps the most striking museum in Vigo since it is focused on human communication. More than a museum in use, we will have a leisure experience here, since we can experience everything related to language through different games designed for all ages. In addition, it is located in the center of Vigo and stands out for its accessibility.

Laxeiro Foundation

This museum is focused on the artist José Otero Abeledo, known by the name of Laxeiro. 62 works of his creation are exhibited in this space. For those who don't know him, Laxeiro is considered the greatest representative of the “renovadores” movement of the Galician avant-garde. This movement tried to go beyond regionalism and change aesthetic identity. An essential Vigo museum for those who want to get closer to this region. Therefore, what we will find will be permanent exhibition halls dedicated to one of the most important Galician artists.

Galician Sea Museum

For those passionate about the sea, this is an almost obligatory visit. Simply its construction is worth it because it is made up of a garden, five warehouses, a square in the center that serves to connect the beaches, an avant-garde building a few meters from the sea, a port, a lighthouse and the Atlantic Ocean itself bordering everything. Here you can find everything related to the Galician fishing industry, the treatment of fish and shellfish and the marine ecosystem that surrounds Galicia. In addition, it is a sample of fishing from its most traditional to the most advanced style.

Although these are five of the most recommended museums in Vigo, we can also find the Castro de Vigo to learn about the constructions from the 2nd century BC. C. and the III century d. C., the ethnographic museum, the sports art museum and many other recreational and educational activities to soak up culture. If we want more information, we can also go to the City Council of this province of Pontevedra to have a great experience and get to know the heritage of the place better.
