Teatro Principal de Zaragoza

Discover the Teatro Principal de Zaragoza That Transports You to Another Era

The Teatro Principal de Zaragoza is the city's most important theater, located at number 57 on the central Coso street.

Its imposing facade is the gateway to a real world full of art, history, cultural events, and shows that transport you to another era.

This theater is a must-visit if you're staying at one of our hotels in the historic center of Zaragoza. Among them, our B&B HOTEL Zaragoza Centro is only a 12-minute walk from the theater.

Other attractions of great tourist interest are the Cathedral of Zaragoza, Plaza del Pilar, the Auditorium of Zaragoza, the Goya Museum, El Tubo, the Central Market, the Bullring, Parque Grande, the Plaza España de Zaragoza, or the Monasterio de Piedra, among others.

From its beginnings to the present day, the Teatro Principal de Zaragoza has been a benchmark in Spain because the most prominent actors and companies of dance, opera, or theater have graced its stage, with the most important performances seen in our country and beyond our borders.

Today, this centennial theater has secrets waiting to be discovered during your visit, as well as a wide program, from classic plays to concerts and contemporary events. Don't hesitate to immerse yourself in this emblematic place in the city!

From a Fire to Being One of the Most Prominent Theaters in Its More Than Two Centuries of Existence

This municipal theater was built in the 17th century on the grounds of the former Monastery of San Agustín and is considered one of the oldest in Spain.

In 1778, a devastating fire occurred in the Coliseo de Comedias Zaragoza (the predecessor of the current theater), located on the site now occupied by the Bank of Spain.

This fire razed everything and caused the building to burn down completely. The construction was made of wood, and the accident tragically ended the lives of 77 people.

However, the public demand was such that Zaragoza could not live without a theater. The fondness for theater in the city has been evident since Roman times.

Provisionally, performances were held in the Palacio de la Lonja, while it was decided where to build a new theater right in front of the destroyed building. This new location, in front of the place where the coliseum burned, was the definitive one and where the Teatro Principal is still accessed today.

In its more than two centuries of existence, the building has undergone changes and improvements. However, the original structure of the auditorium is still preserved identically after the U-shaped theater renovation.

This theater was inaugurated in 1799 with an initial capacity of 1,600 people (it now has 834 seats), and its main renovation came at the end of the 19th century, by Ricardo Magdalena, in which the wooden beams were replaced by iron ones.

Also, the decoration of the hall was changed to what you can see inside today with abundant ornamental spaces.

Finally, between 1985 and 1987, the architect José Manuel Pérez Latorre carried out a comprehensive overhaul of the entire complex, ensuring its continuity again.

The large hall that welcomes the public at the entrance would come years later, in the 20th century, after buying the residential building next to the theater.

At the top of the main facade, the statues of the Muses of theater stand out: Melpomene, Thalia, Euterpe, and Terpsichore. And the current Teatro Principal, completely remodeled by the Zaragoza architect Agustín Sanz, was inaugurated on May 2, 1987.
