El Tubo Zaragoza is one of the oldest areas of the city. You'll find it at one of the edges of Plaza España, where the ancient Cinegia Gate, one of the 4 that the old Roman wall had, was located.
Going out for tapas in El Tubo is a legendary plan if you're staying at one of our B&B HOTELS in Zaragoza. Among them, our B&B HOTEL Zaragoza Centro is just a 12-minute walk from the El Tubo area.
Attention traveler! You can't leave Zaragoza without getting lost in its narrow streets, where gastronomic aromas fill the air and more than one hidden gem is concealed.
It's located in the San Gil neighborhood of the city's old town, bordered by Plaza España, Alfonso I Street, Don Jaime I Street, and Méndez Núñez Street. On the ground, it's a network of alleyways formed by Libertad Street, 4 de Agosto Street, Cinegio Street, Mártires Street, and Estébanes Street. And it can be accessed directly from Plaza de España.
El Tubo Zaragoza is an important point in the city known for its local gastronomic offer. It's one of the most famous tapas areas in the city, full of bars, taverns, and restaurants. The tapas bars are open every day of the week, and you can go for lunch or dinner, although the area is usually more lively in the late afternoon and evening on weekdays, and on weekends, there's an atmosphere at any time of day. Some of the bars specialize in a type of tapa, such as mushrooms, cheeses, or migas, while others offer more elaborate traditional haute cuisine tapas. It's a small and affordable place to take a route and stop to taste traditional dishes in a few bars and taverns, accompanied by good wines, beer, or cocktails.
Highlights include the famous café cantante El Plata or the ancient Casa Lac restaurant, one of the oldest in Spain and Europe, dating back to 1825.
At 23 Cuatro de Agosto Street, you'll find the first cabaret in Spain and the oldest in Europe still in operation, dating back to 1943. The decoration of the venue is original, and El Plata offers spicy shows every day. At 12 Mártires Street is Casa Lac, an old mansion that was renovated to house the ancient restaurant, which still preserves the modernist elements of its 1925 renovation. At 10 Estébanes Street, you'll find Bodegas Almau, one of the most traditional establishments in the city, which opened its doors in 1870 and still retains the wooden structure of the old venue. Not far away, at number 6 Estébanes Street, you can stop to taste at Taberna Doña Casta its unique specialty, which is its famous homemade croquettes with a variety of the most exotic flavors. Opposite Doña Casta is El Champi, whose specialty, as its name suggests, is grilled mushrooms served between bread slices, like a hamburger skewer.
If it gets late and you want to have dinner or drinks on a heated terrace, Terraza Libertad 6.8 awaits you on Libertad Street, an open-air terrace with a very lively atmosphere.
Its streets conceal ancient vestiges of the city, from remains of the Roman Wall of Caesaraugusta, Gothic and Renaissance courtyards, Baroque or Mudejar art elements, among other treasures. At 2 Mártires Street, you'll find the remains of the Cinegia Gate. On the facade of the smallest building in the Puerta Cinegia complex, there are vestiges of the stone blocks that formed this ancient access to the city. This gate was built in the 3rd century AD on the Roman wall and was one of the most important that the city of Zaragoza had. One of the few Gothic courtyards that remain in the city, built in the 15th century, is also located on the side closest to Mártires Street. At 13 Don Jaime I Street is the beautiful Church of San Gil Abad. A temple built in the 14th century with an impressive Mudejar tower. One of the points from which you'll see it best is at the intersection of Cinegio and Estébanes Streets.
Other visits of great tourist attraction that you can't miss are the Cathedral of Zaragoza, Plaza del Pilar, the Main Theater, the Auditorium of Zaragoza, the Goya Museum, the Central Market, the Bullring, the Grand Park, or the Stone Monastery, among others.
