History and heritage

Histoire et patrimoine Saint Jean de Védas.jpg

The town takes its name from the villa of Védatio, built in the 11th century. However, it is the Saint-Jean castle (built on the current Place Victor Hugo) that is at the origin of the creation of the town center.

Between the 11th and 20th centuries, the village was built around this seigniorial castle.

The Védas land also hosts the Domaine du Terral, the summer residence of the Bishops of Maguelone.

Its imposing fortified castle has been destroyed by numerous wars and rebuilt each time.

Transformed into a cultural site, it now belongs to the municipality and houses a theater, an exhibition hall, and rooms intended for the schools of fine arts and music of Saint-Jean-de-Védas.

The local economy was long based on agriculture, livestock breeding and the exploitation of stone quarries. A few hundred meters from the old village, the main quarry is now a leisure area managed by the municipality. At the beginning of the 20th century, the vine became the main agricultural activity of Saint-Jean-de-Védas, despite the ravages caused by the phylloxera epidemic.

The proximity of Montpellier accelerates the economic and demographic development of the city: gradually, the agricultural sector gives way to industrial, artisanal and tertiary activities. The land is urbanized to accommodate new generations of inhabitants. Saint-Jean-de-Védas remains, despite everything, a small town on a human scale, peaceful and pleasant.
