What to see in Lyon: our selection

Elected the 2nd most beautiful large city in the world by the luxury magazine “Conde Nast Traveler”, come in turn to discover Lyon and its many nuggets. Historical monuments, international museums, famous districts, and unusual visits are on the program for your stay in the city of Lyon.

The monuments of Lyon, a must-see

If the city has dozens of monuments, there are some not to be missed under any circumstances. In turn, they have become part of the city's history and have contributed to the international renown of the metropolis.

Discover without further delay, what to visit in Lyon during your visit:

  • The Basilique Notre-Dame de la Fourvière: it is the most emblematic monument of the city. Founded in 1168, the basilica was originally just a modest chapel. The architect Pierre Bossan, in love with the place, undertook gigantic expansion work to pay homage to the Virgin. The latter is said to have protected the inhabitants from a very serious plague epidemic.
  • The Cathédrale Saint-Jean and the astronomical clock: the imposing Gothic and Romanesque cathedral was built over nearly three centuries, from 1175 to 1481. If it is popular, it is mainly thanks to its astronomical clock. This little jewel of 16th century technology attracts the best watchmakers from around the world. The astronomical clock is able to indicate the phases of the moon, the positions of the planets, and the stars located above Lyon! A pure marvel…
  • The Gallo-Roman theater: return to the past, with this monument dating from the first century BC. Surprisingly well preserved, the theater located on the Fourvière hill was only discovered in the 1900s. At the time, it was the meeting place for all of Lyon to attend comedies, shows, and ancient concerts. Continue your journey with the most famous museums in the city.

The museums of Lyon

Unusual, futuristic, classic, the metropolis is home to many museums attracting the interest of thousands of visitors. From the tip of the peninsula, to the Old Lyon district, passing through place des Terreaux, discover the most popular museums of the city:

  • The Confluence museum: built in 2014 between the Rhône and the Saône, this modern-looking museum has quickly become a must-see in the metropolis. It regularly offers temporary exhibitions on the origins of life, but also contains spaces dedicated to archeology, anthropology, and the history of societies and civilizations.
  • The Cinema and Miniature Museum: immerse yourself in a fascinating world with this unusual museum. Decomposed into two parts, the first houses an impressive collection of miniature scenes. Take a look at the models of prisons, restaurant rooms, or natural history museums, in miniature. Then head to the cinema section and its scary monster costumes. Discover the objects used to shoot the greatest horror films including Alien, the Gremlins, or the Chucky doll.
  • The Museum of Fine Arts: located in a former 17th century abbey, the museum houses an impressive collection of works from all over Europe. With more than 7,000 m² of space dedicated to art, admire paintings from the 14th to the 20th century, collections on oriental art, but also Egyptian art. End your visit with a hot drink in the tea room and its view of the garden.
