Lattara
A unique archaeological site!
In the heart of an exceptional archaeological site, the Musée de Lattes offers a unique chronological and thematic journey in Occitanie. Its permanent and temporary exhibitions allow you to discover the ancient city of Lattara and the daily life of its inhabitants. Not to be missed during your stay around Montpellier!
Located in Lattes, near Montpellier, this archaeological site discovered in 1963 by Henri Prades reveals the ancient port of Lattara on the Lez delta. Inhabited between the 6th century BC and the 3rd century AD, this ancient city was home to Etruscans, Greeks, Romans and Gauls.
Close to the protected area of Méjean, Lattara was a major economic and cultural meeting place in the Mediterranean for nearly 8 centuries. The study of the site has therefore made it possible to better understand the habitat and life of the first Mediterranean urban societies. A complete port system was discovered there, an exceptional testimony to the civilizations of the Iron Age. The excavations have also revealed the methods of economic (fishing, hunting, agriculture) and technical (raw materials, crafts, fire management) exploitation of the environment.
The Musée de Lattes exhibits the elements discovered during archaeological excavations, from 1963 to the present day. It offers a look back at the history of the ancient port city and portrays the life of its inhabitants, their daily life and their culture. A real journey through time!
Ceramics, urns, tools, dishes, kitchen utensils, lamps, coins, ancient sculptures and mosaics, jewelry… the permanent exhibition presents visitors with everyday objects from the natives, the Lattarenses. You can also discover stelae as well as objects from the Saint-Michel necropolis, a site containing 76 tombs. Various supports punctuate the visit: scenographic devices, multimedia content, etc. The museum also allows you to discover the life-size model of a Gallic habitat. A game booklet offers children from 7 years old a fun approach to the museum and its collections.
The Henri Prades museum regularly hosts conferences, cultural events and temporary exhibitions dedicated to ancient but also contemporary art. The works of artists from all walks of life are presented there, with the common thread being the tribute to ancient peoples and water civilizations.
To get to the Henri Prades museum, it's easy:
