To the east of the 17th arrondissement of Paris, the Batignolles district is known for its bohemian and trendy spirit. It offers residents and passing tourists a unique atmosphere, between tradition and modernity.
Near porte d’Asnières and porte de Clichy, the Batignolles area extends between boulevard des Maréchaux, boulevard des Batignolles, rue de Tocqueville and avenue de Clichy. In the heart of the capital, this charming district has all the elements of a real small village:
On the architecture side, the Haussmannian buildings of the historical area are adjacent to the ultra-modern constructions of the Clichy-Batignolles eco-district, built on the former SNCF site. Housing offices, homes and all types of shops, these new buildings are located north of rue Cardinet and extend to porte de Clichy. They surround Martin Luther King Park, a vast public garden integrated into the urban landscape.
Hunting reserve of the Merovingian kings in the Middle Ages, the territory of Batignolles became over the centuries a place of agricultural and wine crops. Located outside the "wall of the Farmers General", the district is not subject to tax on goods. Many cabarets took up residence there, because wine was not taxed there.
After the destruction of the barrier at the beginning of the 19th century, the commune of Monceau-Batignolles became a popular place for the construction of country houses. Its pure air attracted Parisian bourgeois, annuitants and artists. The writer Alfred de Vigny took up residence there, as did the famous painters of the Batignolles group (Manet, Monet, Renoir, Bazille) who set up their workshop there.
In 1830, the first town hall was established on rue des Batignolles. The same year, construction began on the Sainte-Marie des Batignolles church on Place du Docteur Félix Lobligeois. It was completed in 1851.
The urbanization of the district accelerated with the arrival of the railway. Batignolles then housed a vast freight station, the depot and the repair workshops located next to the locomotive construction factories. The freight trains supplying the Halles de Paris arrived at Batignolles station. With the arrival of electric trains, steam locomotives disappeared during the 20th century. The redevelopment of the freight station began in 2006 and gave birth to the new Clichy-Batignolles district.
Between walks, shopping and culture, this small haven of peace offers many opportunities for outings. To soak up the atmosphere of Batignolles, stroll through the district along the small shopping streets.
For a shopping session in beautiful trendy boutiques, head to rue Legendre and rue des Dames to discover the shops appreciated by Parisians.
Combining decoration, delicacies and ready-to-wear, the concept stores of the district are among the unmissable addresses of Batignolles.
The many green spaces, squares and public gardens are perfect for strolling in Batignolles. With a surface area of 10 hectares, Martin Luther King park is the most extensive.
Flowered in all seasons, this large garden is self-sufficient in water and electricity. It includes various playgrounds for children, a large orchard, a belvedere and a green beach with deckchairs for sunbathing enthusiasts.
Are you a street art fan? Art 42, the first museum of street arts in France, gives you access to more than 150 works over 4000 m2.
At the end of the day, settle down on the terrace of a bistro or wine bar for a well-deserved Parisian aperitif: an activity a must-do in the Batignolles district.
