The brewery culture in Cologne

Cologne and its majestic cathedral attract hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world every year. But the city is not only known for its cathedral, its streets steeped in history and its exuberant party atmosphere, especially at carnival time. There is also a culture here that is deeply rooted in the hearts of the people: the brewery culture.

Want to get to know the real Cologne? Then you should definitely stop off at one of the many breweries. And not just to enjoy the local beer. Tradition, conviviality, culture and enjoyment come together in Cologne's breweries. Here you can experience the authentic Rhenish soul. B&B HOLTES reveals where to find the best breweries and what to expect there.

Why are the breweries in Cologne so special?

The history of Cologne's breweries goes back a long way, and many of them have their own history. Some have been owned by the same family for generations, others have lived through different eras and historical events. But they all share a love of beer, conviviality and culture. Almost every Veedel, Cologne's word for district, has its own brewery in Cologne.

The brewery culture is a really lively and traditional scene that is closely linked to the city and its inhabitants. In the shady alleyways and along the Rhine stretches the great heritage of breweries, which have been traditional meeting places, oases of conviviality and sources of delicious Kölsch beer for centuries. This unique brewery culture not only reflects the history of brewing, but also the way of life of the people of Cologne and their attachment to their homeland.

As Peters Brauhaus in the Old Town proves, brewery culture is more than just a place where beer is brewed. Of course, the famous Kölsch beer is a must. But the secret of brewery culture lies not only in the beer, but also in the atmosphere. Breweries like Brauhaus Reissdorf are places to meet, celebrate and enjoy. Here you can sense warmth and community. As soon as you cross the threshold of a brewery, you feel like part of the family.

The best breweries in town

Hellers Brauerei has been brewing organic beers since 1991. Today, in addition to the classic Kölsch, there is also Wiess and Bock beer. The small brewery still brews its beer by hand and invites curious connoisseurs to take a tour of the brewery. The Päffgen Brauhaus impresses with its eight rooms. It is the oldest home brewery in Cologne and still brews beer at its original location in the Friesenviertel.

The Gaffel brewery is also typically Rhenish. Located right next to the cathedral, it impresses with its cheerful, positive atmosphere on three floors and, of course, the unique view of the cathedral! In the cozy rooms of the Max Stark restaurant, locals and tourists can experience Cologne hospitality. A quaint atmosphere and rustic dishes make the restaurant an insider tip for good food and fresh drinks in the Kunibertsviertel.

The delicious Mühlen-Kölsch is available in the Pütz and in the Malzmühle on Heumarkt in the old town. The brewery is run by the fifth generation of the Schwartz family and looks back on over 160 years of history. You can celebrate here until 1 a.m. in a cozy atmosphere with long tables, a convivial get-together and a cheerful atmosphere.

Not all Kölsch is created equal!

Cologne's breweries each brew their own Kölsch beer, naturally in accordance with the German Purity Law of 1516. Each brewery has a Kölsch classic, which always bears the name of the brewery. The light, sparkling and refreshing beer is served in small, slim glasses and is a symbol of Cologne's identity. It is a top-fermented beer and therefore easily digestible. So: Nit lang schwade - lade!

A bite to go with Kölsch

The laid-back attitude of the Rhinelanders is also reflected in Cologne's food culture, especially in the breweries. The offerings are simple but hearty: Himmel und Äd, Sauerbraten and Halver Hahn, but also fried black pudding or thick bunne with bacon give an insight into the down-to-earth and tasty Rhenish cuisine.
