Pure nature: take a deep breath

Nature lovers and active vacationers enjoy the romance of nature in Saxony-Anhalt. The Harz National Park and the UNESCO Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve offer fantastic landscapes. Look forward to idyllic hiking trails, quiet reservoirs, an impressive suspension bridge, many caves, great ski slopes and cross-country ski trails in winter, and of course the highest mountain in Northern Germany - the Brocken.

The landmark of Saxony-Anhalt is 1,141 meters above sea level. The summit can be reached either on foot, by bike or more comfortably with the Brocken Railway. If you want to avoid the sporty ascent and still want to take a deep breath, stroll through the gardens of Wörlitz Park near Dessau or take a walk in the 40 garden complexes of Brühl Park.

Other popular activities for young and old include cycling tours on the Elbe Cycle Path, hikes on the Harz Witches' Trail, canoe trips in the Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region, horse riding excursions in the Altmark or explorations of the older St. James or Luther pilgrimage routes.

A journey into history

What do the half-timbered houses in Quedlinburg, the Luther memorials in Eisleben and Wittenberg, the Bauhaus and the master houses in Dessau, as well as the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm and the Naumburg Cathedral have in common? They are all UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The federal state offers numerous opportunities for a journey into the past.

The Romanesque Road connects around 80 Romanesque churches, cathedrals, castles, palaces and abbeys. The treasures in the cathedrals allow visitors to immerse themselves in this magnificent era from around 950 to 1250.

We continue with a later epoch. Around 1517, Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses against the indulgence trade to the door of the Wittenberg Castle Church. As the cradle of the Reformation, Saxony-Anhalt also invites you to walk in Luther's footsteps in the places that shaped his life.

At the end of the journey through time is the Bauhaus Museum in Dessau and thus the 20th century. And so, holidaymakers wander through historical sites that decisively shaped German history.

The most beautiful cities in Saxony-Anhalt

Quedlinburg is one of the most beautiful cities in the state. It is not individual sights, but the entire ensemble of the medieval city that make it so worth seeing. The half-timbered houses are grouped around the castle hill and have often served as a perfect film set.

Especially noteworthy is the Quedlinburg Town Hall, which at that time was already built of expensive stone, while the town halls themselves in Magdeburg, Cologne or Lübeck were still made of wood. Hence the expression "to be stone rich".

About 30 kilometers away is Wernigerode - a colorful, lively city. The elaborately restored and colorful half-timbered houses are located on the northern edge of the Harz Mountains and convey a particularly warm atmosphere. It is 19 kilometers to the Brocken, which is about 50 minutes by car. The local castle, once the residence of the Counts of Stolberg-Wernigerode, now houses a museum for art and cultural history of the 19th century.

Historically, the city is known for its witch trials, which is why witches and little devils are among the typical symbols of the Harz Mountains. Today, Wernigerode is the first city with a witch traffic light, a pedestrian traffic light with a witch motif. It is the counterpart to the well-known Ampelmännchen in Berlin.

What you must have eaten in Saxony-Anhalt

Everywhere in the country, it smells and steams in the kitchens, including in Auerbach's Mill in Wolmirstedt. Thanks to the lush forests and abundant rivers of the Harz, fish and game are the main dishes on the regionally typical menu: wild boar goulash, venison and deer roast or the Harz mountain trout. Of course, the famous, odorous and protein-rich Harz cheese should not be missing.

With good food, there can also be a little drink: In the south of the country, the Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region delights wine lovers. But the Harz brewing art has also made a name for itself with "Schierker Feuerstein" and "Hasseröder Premium Pils".

Come by and get to know the advantages of Saxony-Anhalt. Our friendly staff look forward to your visit and will be happy to give you all the information you need.
