Teatro real

Come to the Teatro Real in Madrid to enjoy the best opera

The Teatro Real is considered the leading institution for performing arts and music in Spain, standing as the national reference opera and one of the main Spanish cultural institutions. We are talking about the main performing arts auditorium in the city. With 200 years of history, it is officially the opera house of Madrid and one of its most relevant monuments. Its building is located in the Plaza de Oriente, very close to the Royal Palace of Madrid.

It has an impressive entrance, and its floor plan is divided into three main areas: the stage, where all the productions take place; two galleries for spectators; and a scenic area for rehearsals. The artistic project of the Teatro Real has made it possible for the institution to currently be one of the great international hubs of opera activity and a cultural reference point for Spanish institutions.

Its artistic program serves both the traditional lyric repertoire and the contemporary, which incorporates 20th-century music and the latest avant-garde, with the firm conviction of offering the public a place to discover the best artists and creators of the moment in concerts. It also pays special attention to new audiences and the dissemination of opera among the youngest public. It offers tickets for young people four hours before the performance at a reduced price. The theater is famous for its spectacular scenic design, state-of-the-art production technology and a well-selected repertoire of classical and contemporary works.

If you want to see the most important theater in Madrid, you should not miss visiting the Teatro Real, either by attending performances or a visit with an audio guide.

A bit of history of the Teatro Real in Madrid

Its inauguration dates back to 1737 by Antonio López Aguado, and since then it has become one of the most renowned theaters in Europe. This theater is well known for its premieres and for its unique stage director, Ivor. The construction of an opera house for Madrid was promoted by King Fernando VII, on the occasion of the reforms of the Plaza de Oriente. The Teatro Real came to replace the old Teatro de los Caños del Peral. So the current theater is the main building of this important square in Madrid, overlooking the Plaza de Isabel II and the Plaza de Oriente.

The works began in 1830 and finished in 1850. The best artists of the time participated in its decoration, creating an impressive hall for its interior decoration, on par with the best theaters in Europe. The most established artists of the genre and the most successful operas have been presented on its stage. However, various financial and structural crises led to its closure in 1925. It was not until 1966 that it reopened its doors, but as a concert hall for the National Orchestra, a period that extended until 1988. In 1991 the theater underwent a renovation to turn it back into a theater for operas, recovering the original decoration.

What can you see at the Teatro Real?

The Teatro Real de Madrid has hosted some of the most famous works in history such as “The Christmas that almost wasn't”, the “Universal Music Festival” or the Eurovision Festival itself. The three most represented operas have been by Guiseppi Verdi: Rigoletto, Aida, and finally, Il Trovatore, which have managed to fill their maximum capacity of 1,958 seats. In addition, it also houses a foundation that collects data on theatrical performances around the world. This information is used to promote Spanish culture and help with future productions. A visit to the Teatro Real is highly recommended.

From here we encourage you to tour the lobby, the different halls, boxes, as well as the tapestries, frescoes, and decorative details of this building full of history. From the cafeteria window you can enjoy the wonderful views of the gardens of Plaza de Oriente and the Royal Palace. Moreover, on its website you can book the one-hour audio-guided tour.
