San Miguel Market

Visit San Miguel Market and Experience Madrid’s Century-Old Gastronomic Temple

Located in the heart of historic Madrid and welcoming over 10 million visitors annually, San Miguel Market is the city's gastronomic temple, bringing together the contemporary essence of Spain’s diverse culinary traditions.

Originally inaugurated in May 1916 as a food market, this historic establishment was transformed in May 2009 into Madrid’s first gastronomic market. Situated in the square of the same name, next to Madrid’s Plaza Mayor, San Miguel Market is a privately owned market that preserves its original early 20th-century iron structure. Spanning two floors and covering 1,200 square meters, it is one of the few remaining examples of iron architecture in the city and is widely recognized as the most gourmet market in Madrid.

If you are planning a trip to Madrid and want to experience authentic Spanish cuisine, visiting this century-old market is one of the must-do tourist activities we recommend.

Interesting Facts for Lovers of Spanish Cuisine

From the finest Iberian ham to the freshest seafood from Galicia, Mediterranean-style rice dishes, and the most exquisite cheeses from Castilla, Asturias, or the Basque Country—this market has it all. This gastronomic temple is filled with top-quality products and wines from every corner of Spain. At San Miguel Market, you will find the very best of Spanish cuisine across more than 20 food stalls, all committed to serving high-quality tapas.

In medieval times, this area functioned as an open-air market, surrounded by stalls (known as "cajones") where guilds sold artisanal products. During the rule of Joseph Bonaparte, the old parish church of San Miguel de los Octoes was demolished. In its place, a small square was left, eventually leading to the construction of the market, which inherited the name of the former parish. By 1809, it had become an open-air market specializing in seafood sales.

The covered market was built between 1913 and 1916 under the supervision of architect Alfonso Dubé y Díez, inspired by other European markets constructed in iron, such as Les Halles in Paris.

During 2018, the market experienced a period of expansion, gaining recognition for its extraordinary gastronomic selection, which now includes renowned national and international chefs and restaurants.

Today, this historic building stands as one of the world’s leading gastronomic markets, allowing visitors to embark on a journey through the flavors and culinary essence of Spain.

Come and Enjoy High-Quality Tapas

Inside the market, you’ll find premium-quality products sourced from all over Spain: from tapas made with the freshest seafood from Galicia’s coast to an extensive selection of gourmet cheeses from across the country.

Some of the standout offerings include the handcrafted, all-natural ice creams by Joan Roca (3 Michelin stars) at Rocambolesc, traditional paellas by Rodrigo de la Calle (1 Michelin star) at Paella, and authentic tapas from Grupo Arzábal, among many others.

Following its reopening in July 2021, four new stalls have been introduced: Madreamiga, an artisan bakery in Madrid led by baker Begoña San Pedro, chef Clara Villalón, and Grosso Napoletano co-founder Hugo Rodríguez de Prada; Prrimital, specializing in meats; Picolisto, offering a variety of Spanish omelets; and Quesería Quesoba, dedicated to artisanal cheeses.

Additionally, El Señor Martín, a refined seafood and fish restaurant, has expanded its presence within the market. Another notable addition is P.A.N, a pioneering brand of pre-cooked corn flour, offering a menu centered around Venezuelan arepas and other specialties.

The group behind this market, Gastrónomo de San Miguel, is dedicated to being part of Madrid’s cultural and social agenda. It collaborates on various entertainment and cultural activities to help revitalize the historic center of Madrid.
