What to see in Cartagena?

Cartagena is one of the oldest cities in our country and is a historical gem. Its history began in 227 BC and its founder was Hasdrubal the Handsome, who laid the first stone of one of the most important cities of the Roman Empire. Carthago Nova was one of the main metropolises and that is still noticeable when you walk through the old streets of this city in the Murcia region. Therefore, in Cartagena there are many things to see and your visit will be very entertaining.

The Roman past

One of the most interesting parts to see in Cartagena has to do with its past closely linked to the Roman era. The archaeological remains are many and the ancient architecture can be felt in each of the streets of the city center. Among other things, we can visit the Roman Forum district, the Roman Theater museum, the archaeological remains and, of course, the Roman Theater of Cartagena.

To better understand Roman history, it is advisable to go to the interpretation center to request information and thus be able to better understand the importance of Carthago Nova in history and be more aware of our route through the centuries.

The medieval past

Cartagena was also one of the most important cities in medieval Spain. Something that is noticeable as soon as you arrive in the city. Here stands out the Castle of the Conception, whose year of construction is between the 13th and 14th centuries. Very close to this place is the panoramic elevator, which allows you to have privileged views of this city of Murcia, although for this it will be necessary to make an appointment.

Museums

The Naval Museum and the Civil War Museum have also become two points of tourist interest. In the first, we can visit the Peral Submarine, which was the first with military functionality in history. Thus, the building has great value for lovers of the Spanish Navy and the history of our country. Do you want to know more about the museums of Cartagena? See our article.

What else to see in Cartagena?

Cartagena is one of those cities that mix history with the sea. In addition to the more cultural and historical parts and activities, such as walking along the wall, we can also enjoy the beaches, the city's port and a multitude of ideal places for leisure.

Thus, in the city we can go from having a drink in a small square, to visiting the remains of the Roman Empire, the Palacio Consistorial, a building that is a modernist benchmark, and many other places that were built decades ago and that reflect the historical richness that has survived all kinds of wars and other setbacks that jeopardized the city. In Cartagena you can also enjoy the culinary specialties of the city in the best restaurants.
