Discover the Terrain des Peintres, in the footsteps of Cézanne

The Terrain des Peintres (Painters' Terrain) is a landscaped site to discover the magnificent typical Provençal landscape, but not only. It is also the place where Paul Cézanne went to paint the Sainte-Victoire mountain. Discover this incredible viewpoint and imagine yourself as a painter for a few moments with your easel.

Why is this place called the "Terrain des Peintres"?

The Terrain des Peintres refers to the place where the painter Paul Cézanne went to paint his works of art. It is located near the Cézanne workshop, only 750 meters away.

Developed in 2004 by the city of Aix, you can enjoy 400 m² of nature. It invites you to let go and discover the beautiful muse that inspired the painter when creating his paintings in the 1900s. There are about forty oils and watercolors where the Sainte-Victoire mountain is painted!

Why walk on the Terrain des Peintres?

Do you like bucolic walks, feeling free in nature while enjoying its wonders? Do you want to observe the Provençal landscape which is so particular, but so charming? Are you a lover of Paul Cézanne's paintings? If you check at least one of these 3 boxes, this is a walk that you absolutely must do!

Enjoy a magnificent walk with a Mediterranean landscape

Take your time during your getaway: the goal is to take full advantage of this setting worthy of a real French postcard. Find the trees and plants that characterize the Provençal countryside: olive trees, pines, thyme. Let yourself be carried away by the surrounding noise: did you recognize the species of birds singing? In summer, you will inevitably hear the song of the cicada, so characteristic of the region!

A cult place where Cézanne painted

In homage to the painter, you will find 9 reproductions of the Sainte-Victoire mountain on the belvedere. By observing the point of view offered to you, you will then understand that it is the same one that appears on his works. So, imagine Paul Cézanne setting up his easel and painting the panorama in front of him.

A site open all the time

Access is free: you can go there whenever you want! Enjoy a magnificent sunset or sunrise over Sainte-Victoire from the Terrain des Peintres. Thrills guaranteed, in addition to enjoying a little more freshness than in the middle of the day. Another advantage? The walk remains easy to do: the less athletic will not have to worry.

If you want to know more about the life of Paul Cézanne, the Cézanne workshop is a must. You can get there in 15 minutes on foot: enough to make your legs walk a bit! Visiting this place on the Lauves hill is like going behind the scenes: you will find the tools that the painter used, but not only. Temporary exhibitions are also present on the site. Reservation is mandatory via the Internet and can be done freely or guided. Complete your adventure with the Bastide du Jas de Bouffan and its park, the Cézanne family home. Magnificent property, it leaves no one indifferent, especially with its charming maintained gardens that leave you dreaming. Like Sainte-Victoire, the Bibémus quarries played the role of muses on at least ten of his works. So why not go there?

If you just prefer to walk

Do you prefer to continue to enjoy the surrounding nature? Head towards the oppidum of Entremont via the Chemin de la Marguerite for about 1 km on foot. This site is even more interesting if you are interested in archeology!

There is the possibility of doing many hikes in the area, suitable for all hiker profiles. The most difficult offer a superb reward: a sublime panorama of the region. On a clear day, it is even possible to see the Alps and the sea from the mountain!
