What to do in Venelles

Venelles is a charming little town north of Aix-en-Provence, about ten kilometers away. It is an ideal place to put down your suitcases to explore the town and its surroundings. Discover the activities to do in Venelles and leave with your head full of beautiful memories for a weekend.

Visit the city of Venelles

Get lost in the beautiful historic streets of Venelles. During a short walk, you can discover what a typical Provençal city is, with its charming buildings.

Venelles also offers a breathtaking panorama of the Lubéron, the Sainte-Victoire mountain. Indeed, as it is a town at altitude, it is easy to enjoy the surrounding landscape. Admire the old buildings, such as the windmill or the vestiges of the old feudal castle. The old village of Venelles-le-Haut is worth a detour, time seems to have stopped there. The earthquake caused a lot of damage there, destroying in particular the church of Saint-Hyppolite.

Hiking on mountain trails

As Venelles is located in the countryside, it is quite possible to go hiking in the area. If you like to enjoy the fresh air and want to see a bucolic landscape, there is no shortage of walks.

For the more sporty, there are hikes to do in the Saint-Victoire mountain. The reward? A superb view of the surroundings and its nature! Among the best known, you will find these trails:

  • the priory of Sainte-Victoire;
  • Lake Bimont;
  • the Croix de Provence.

So put on your best shoes and off you go! Remember to leave early to enjoy the morning freshness: in this region, the heat rises quickly. Some trails may also not be accessible due to drought and fire risks. Find out before embarking on a trail. Remember sunscreen, cover your head and, above all, hydrate!

Discover the attractions near Venelles

The advantage of Venelles is that it is close to many tourist sites! The PACA region being really dry in summer, we advise you to stay in the shade in the alleys.

Aix-en-Provence

There is much to see in Aix-en-Provence. Here are some places where tourism is popular:

  • the Calisson Museum: famous for its confectionery;
  • the places frequented by Paul Cézanne: in particular the Atelier de Cézanne, the Terrain des Peintres, the Bastide du Jas de Bouffan or the Bibémus quarries;
  • discovery of the old Aix city;
  • visit of the Cours Mirabeau;
  • the Granet Art Museum.

Every summer, you can attend the lyrical singing festival. Whether it's a hobby, your profession, or simply curiosity, we encourage you to go there!

Les Pennes Mirabeau

North of Marseille and south of Aix-en-Provence, the town of Pennes Mirabeau deserves to be lingered over. It is not its industrial zone that we are going to discuss, but rather its old village. Indeed, as soon as we cross this rather unsightly place and arrive in the historic heart, our opinion changes on the place. Interesting fact: some buildings are carved directly into the rocks!

Éguilles

A 20-minute drive from Venelles, this pretty village perched at an altitude of 300 meters is the starting point for many hikes. Its privileged position allows it to offer you magnificent panoramas of typical Provençal landscapes. Strolling through the streets is part of the adventure: do not hesitate to immortalize your visit with photos!

Pertuis

Located in the Vaucluse department, Pertuis is a 15-minute drive from Venelles. Stroll through the alleys during your visit and do not hesitate to stop at the municipal theater. As the town is located at the gateway to the Lubéron Regional Natural Park, many outdoor activities are possible. For example, you can enjoy canoeing on the Vaucluse, or hiking and mountain biking in the regional park. We never tire of the ocher-colored rock which adds to the postcard!

If you stay more than a weekend in Venelles, why not discover Marseille and its Old Port? The Phocaean city clearly deserves to be visited.
