Place de la Comédie in Montpellier: a must-see

Place de la Comédie is located in the historic center, southeast of the Écusson district in Montpellier. It owes its name to the various theaters that have succeeded one another there. Today, the municipal theater still occupies an entire side of the central square. Good to know: because of its oval shape, it is also nicknamed "Place de l'œuf".
This large pedestrian square has a strategic location. Close to Saint-Pierre Cathedral, the Corum (Convention Center), the Polygon (shopping center) and the SNCF train station, it is an inevitable place of passage for tourists and locals!
To access Place de la Comédie, nothing could be simpler: the stop is served by several bus and tram lines. If you arrive by car, you can easily park your vehicle in one of the public car parks located near the city center of Montpellier. It is also the starting point for excursions by small train.

The Three Graces Fountain

Installed in the center of the square, this sculptural ensemble in Carrara marble is emblematic of the city of Montpellier. In neoclassical style, it represents 3 daughters of Zeus, goddesses of Greek mythology. This superb fountain dating from the 18th century has been modified and moved several times during the renovation of the Comédie. It remains one of the favorite meeting points for locals! The original sculpture has been replaced by a new resin replica. The Three Graces now adorn the entrance to the Opéra Comédie where they are better preserved from damage caused by pollution. 

The Charles de Gaulle esplanade

The Charles de Gaulle esplanade is a very pleasant promenade connecting the central square to the Corum. Bordered by plane trees, it stretches over 500 meters in length. Everything is designed to make the walk even more pleasant: fountains, benches and café terraces allow you to enjoy a refreshing break at any time!

The Polygone shopping center

To go shopping, head to the Polygone, the largest shopping center in Montpellier! With more than a hundred brands of ready-to-wear, accessories, tableware, culture, leisure and decoration, it is a must for shopping fans! In the small streets adjacent to Place de l'œuf (rue de la Loge, rue de Verdun), there are also many independent boutiques and small neighborhood shops.
