Montpellier's top 10 districts

Image
Le top 10 des quartiers de Montpellier.jpg

Ideally located 10 km from the Mediterranean Sea, Montpellier is a very popular city in the south of France. Monuments, outings, student life, shopping or gastronomy: discover the districts of Montpellier to favor!

1. The Écusson district

Historic heart of Montpellier, the Écusson district is the nerve center of the city. It owes its name to its particular shape, reminiscent of that of a shield. We stroll along the medieval streets to admire its historical monuments: the Arc de Triomphe, Saint Pierre cathedral or the Babote tower... Another activity not to be missed: have a drink on the terrace on the most beautiful squares of Montpellier! From the Comédie to the Peyrou promenade via Place de la Canourgue, soak up the atmosphere of the beating heart of the city!

2. La Comédie

Locals, students and tourists meet in this lively district of the hyper-center. Place de la Comédie in Montpellier, adorned with a superb Italian-style theater and a monumental fountain, is the strategic meeting point of this district. For shopping, the small adjacent streets are home to many designer boutiques. On the square, there is also the Polygone, the largest shopping center in the city. The best restaurants in Montpellier center are located right next door.

3. The Beaux Arts district

Adjacent to the Écusson district, the Beaux-Arts district is in the city center of Montpellier. Its shaded square hosts a pretty market. A real village in the city, the artists' district seduces with its friendly and colorful atmosphere. Less people than in the Comédie, but just as charming!

4. The Boutonnet district

Very close to the historic center, this student district is the youngest in Montpellier. There are many bars and restaurants but also pleasant green spaces like the Saint-Odile park, former garden of the Boutonnet castle.

5. The Port Marianne district

Located on the banks of the Lez, a coastal river supplying the city, the Port-Marianne district is very popular with the youth of Montpellier. This modern district offers many possibilities for activities. It hosts the FISE (international festival of extreme sports) every year, an event open to amateur and professional athletes.

6. The Arceaux district

Both bohemian and historic, this district is famous for its Roman aqueduct, the Saint-Clément aqueduct. There are also many organic shops and a host of charming vintage boutiques, ideal for bargain hunting near the city center.

7. Aiguelongue

A true green lung of the city, the Aiguelongue district has one of the most pleasant municipal parks, the Méric estate. It also houses the Villa des Cents Regards, an atypical construction that now hosts cultural events and exhibitions throughout the year.

8. Les Aubes

Bordered by the Lez, this district is one of the quietest in Montpellier. A vast public transport network connects the inhabitants of Les Aubes to the city center and other districts of Montpellier. This very lively residential area, near the banks of the Lez, is a true little bubble of tranquility.

9. Saint-Roch

The Saint Roch district is named after its church dedicated to the patron saint of the city. It is one of the best served districts of the city thanks to the presence of the multimodal interchange hub and the SNCF train station. Cosmopolitan and dynamic, this downtown area has many shops.

10. Antigone

Between the Écusson and the Lez river, Antigone surprises with its singular architecture. It was the Catalan Ricardo Bofill who designed this district inspired by ancient Greece in the 80s. Monumental column buildings built according to the golden ratio, sculptures representing Greco-Roman masterpieces like the Venus of Arles... this grandiose district highlights the neo-classical codes. Mainly pedestrian, Antigone is a peaceful place, ideal for strolling and getting some fresh air. Not to be missed: the Esplanade de l'Europe and its majestic buildings.
