Nantes airport: a modern, welcoming facility

Nantes-Atlantique Airport is the largest in western France, after Bordeaux. In 2022, it welcomed nearly 6 million passengers. From a strategic military camp, it has since become an essential stopover for many travelers in transit. Practical services, shops and restaurants make up its reputation. Prepare your luggage and enter Nantes airport.

Nantes airport, a military history

The history of Nantes-Atlantique Airport is that of an aviation camp originally used by the military. It was in 1928

that this infrastructure was born on a 50-hectare plot of land, near the departmental road that leads from Nantes to Paimbœuf.

At the time, this airfield served as an air base for the French army. From the years 1934-1935, it was connected to the Breguet aviation workshops, installed in the Bois du Brossais, near the Château Bougon.

Very quickly, in 1939, the army redeveloped the landing and take-off runway – whose surface is grass – into a new asphalt runway. During the Second World War, the place became strategic, the Germans invested the site from which they sent their bombers towards England.

The French army regained possession of the camp at the end of the war. In the years 1948-49, the airport expanded to nearly 300 hectares. Later, from 1950, the first commercial and tourist activities appeared.

In 1963, the infrastructure was named: Château Bougon International Airport. And it was in 1988 that it took its current name of Nantes-Atlantique Airport. From now on, Transavia, Easyjet, Air Maroc, Blue Air and many companies are part of its landscape.
