The markets of La Rochelle offer you a fabulous culinary and artisanal journey. Discover the delicious local products and enjoy the lively and friendly atmosphere prevailing under the halls and in the streets on market days!
The traditional market is located in the city center, near the iconic monuments, shops and main museums of La Rochelle. Built in the 19th century on the site of the city's first meat market, its structure made of glass, brick and wrought iron does not go unnoticed.
Inside, the market gardeners, butchers, pork butchers, fishmongers, oyster farmers, cheesemakers, bakers and caterers from La Rochelle offer you products that are more delicious than the others to fill your basket or to taste on site... Regional wines and spirits are not to be outdone: pineau des Charentes and Cognac are prominently displayed on the stands, let yourself be tempted by a tasting!
The central market is open every day from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. And every Wednesday and Saturday morning, the Forains market takes up residence in the neighboring streets: rue Thiers, rue Gambetta and rue de la Forme. You will find many food stands as well as non-food stalls and artisanal creations. Enough to satisfy all your shopping desires!
Parking in downtown La Rochelle is not the easiest. However, free parking spaces are available at the Minimes port (near La Rochelle Aquarium or the Maritime Museum of La Rochelle). From there, several city buses will take you to your destination. If you arrive by train, La Rochelle station is less than a 20-minute walk away: this lovely walk will give you the opportunity to stroll through the historic center before doing your shopping, an activity to do absolutely in La Rochelle.
Are you on a weekend in the white city? Head west of the city to discover the very popular Pallice market! Not far from the Marcel Deflandre stadium and Chef de baie (one of the most beautiful beaches of La Rochelle), this family market offers stands of local fruit and vegetable producers, superb stalls of fish and seafood as well as a choice of meats and cooked dishes. It extends along the boulevard du Maréchal Lyautey. You will also find peddlers selling clothing, accessories and everyday objects.
The Pallice market takes place every Sunday morning, between 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. To get there, car or city bus are good options.
Note: the Pallice district is a 5-minute drive from La Rochelle-île de Ré airport.
