Due to its port, La Rochelle has always been a strategic city. It has been a majorport complex since the 12th century. In the meantime it has changed hands several times, having been the property of Louis VII of France, Henri II of England and Louis VIII.
La Rochelle’s town planning is unique, in that it preserves its rich history whilst still developing the city. Its covered precincts, for example, are more than 400 years old and have made the city famous. Pedestrian streets are increasing in number in the conurbation, ramping up the city’s charm.

During your stay in La Rochelle, don’t miss the Tour de la Chaine, one of the Old Port’s two emblematic towers which marks the port entrance. Built in the 14th century, it is now a listed monument. Now converted into a museum, this tower is open to visitors all year round.
The Old Port’s other tower, the Tour Saint-Nicolas leans a little more and is 36 metres tall. It is also a listed monument. This tower also currently houses a museum, which is open to visitors all year round. In 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013, it even hosted a diving competition: impressive!

La Rochelle has many places of worship, including in particular the Cathédrale Saint-Louisand the l’Église Saint-Sauveur. Their architectural style makes them well worth a visit.

For those with children, we recommend hitting the legendary Fort Boyard! It lies between the île d’Aix and île d'Oléron islands, and you can take a boat trip to this former prison site. This spectacular monument attracts a great many tourists each year.
