The history and design of the Cité du Vin

It was in 2011 that the project of the Cité du Vin in Bordeaux was born. The project is pharaonic and a jury is formed to designate the future architects. Anouk Legendre and Nicolas Desmazières of the French agency XTU are chosen to take up the challenge. They then imagine a space of 13,350 m², composed of a wooden frame, with generous curves.

The inspiration comes to them during a meeting with winegrowers and a tasting of exceptional vintages*. The architects then think of a building that would let all the strength of this universe express itself, while offering a moment of tranquility to its visitors. Details such as the color are then discussed with the UNESCO committee, to agree on golden brown tones in accordance with the rest of the city.
Anxious to offer an eco-responsible building, the architects opt for sustainable materials and renewable energies to heat the interior of the museum. Between the birth of the project in May 2011 and its official opening in 2016, several years pass before being able to welcome the first tourists.

The Cité du Vin is now managed by the Foundation for the culture and civilizations of wine, a foundation recognized of public utility. Its objective is to safeguard and enhance the wine heritage, by making it accessible to everyone. The foundation opts for an immersive approach and is chosen by the City of Bordeaux for this reason.
