Les Halles de Bacalan: the place to be for lovers of good food

Created in 2017 within the Bassins à flot district, the Bacalan market halls have become the place to be to stock up on quality products. Enjoy your stay in Bordeaux to discover this building with unique architecture and stroll along the Garonne.

The history of the Bacalan market halls

The district already had a space entirely dedicated to wine, with the Cité du vin, as well as numerous exhibitions and tastings on the subject. But there was still a need for a place to pay tribute to French gastronomy. This was done with the opening of the new Bacalan market halls in 2017, designed by the company Biltoki. Specialized in the rehabilitation of old-fashioned market halls like those of Biarritz, the Basque company has been able to put its skills to the service of the Bacalan market halls. In partnership with the company Legendre, Biltoki has drawn up plans for an original result with a roof entirely composed of wooden blades. With the boom that Bordeaux is experiencing and in particular the Chartrons sector, the population has doubled in just a few years, reaching 20,000 inhabitants. To meet the demand of residents and tourists, many developments have been made by the city including the creation of these halls. With an area of approximately 1,000 m², the market offers a wide choice of quality products, almost all from the southwest region. In addition to the halls, the square will soon see the appearance of offices, as well as hotels, on a set of two hectares. Enough to give even more appeal to this already tourist district.
