Are you planning a trip to Vienna and want to see more than just Vienna's historic centre and the city's countless monuments? Especially those who are interested in the first-class architecture, events, arts culture and, not least, the contemporary history of the Austrian capital, should visit the Vienna State Opera with plenty of time to spare. Find out why here.
The Vienna State Opera is considered one of the most important opera houses in the world. And not only because of the around 60 different operas, operettas, concerts and ballets that captivate visitors to the Vienna State Opera in more than 350 stage performances every year.
After only eight years of construction, the Vienna State Opera was the first major building to be erected on Vienna's Ringstrasse. The modern building was designed by Austrian architects August von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll in the Renaissance style and was intended to accommodate more than 2,000 opera-goers. However, the monumental building, which initially met with little approval from the Viennese, was built by the Czech architect Josef Hlávka. As the Vienna Court Opera, the opera house was ceremoniously opened in 1869 in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth with Mozart's Don Giovanni. However, the modern opera house only received its present name after the foundation of the First Austrian Republic in 1921. Before the end of the Second World War, the Vienna State Opera was severely damaged and the opera house and theatre had to be temporarily housed in the Vienna State Opera. It was not until 1955, after reconstruction and extensive restoration work under the direction of Erich Boltenstern, that the opera was able to welcome guests again.
A visit to the opera house is not only worthwhile if you want to listen to the sounds of classical works such as La Bohème, Carmen or La Traviata. Architecture aficionados will also get their money's worth here. While you can still marvel at the original façade of the Renaissance-style building on the Ringstrasse, the combination of the historic and modern wings of the opera house interior is a delight.
Although the Vienna State Opera attracts audiences with a varied musical programme and can easily compete with the opera house ensembles of Paris, Budapest or Sydney, interested parties can always find detailed information about the programme and schedules on the Opera's official website. Whether with productions such as The Merchant of Venice, Eugene Onegin, Die Fledermaus or classics such as AIDA and Rigoletto, the Vienna State Opera delights opera fans, both young and experienced, with impressive performances throughout the year.
