Vienna airport

For many visitors to the Austrian capital, their journey begins at Vienna Airport. This is because Schwechat Airport is Austria's largest and most modern airport, as well as one of Europe's most important hubs for flights to the Middle East. Whether you are planning a city trip or want to visit Vienna's many monuments, museums, restaurants or cultural highlights such as the Vienna State Opera, here you can find all the important information about the airport, how to get there, luggage, car hire, parking and much more.

Establishment and development of Vienna Airport

Heidfeld Airport was built in 1938 as a military airport and air base for the German Air Force. Heinkel-Werke Rostock began producing its own aircraft here as early as 1942. After the airport was taken over by the Red Army in April 1945, it was initially used mainly by the British Royal Air Force, and British European Airways soon operated regular flights to Vienna. Civilian expansion of Vienna Airport began in 1954. On 1 January of the same year, the Wiener Flughafenbetriebsgesellschaft took over both administration and management. Although the centre of Vienna was initially connected to the airport mainly by ÖBB buses, the construction of an underground railway station at the airport began in the 1970s. This made it possible for passengers to reach the city airport directly by bus and train.

Current use

Increasing passenger numbers, growing cargo volumes, increasing air traffic and the importance of Vienna Airport as an international aviation hub necessitated a huge expansion of the airport in the following years. In 2019 alone, the airport was used by more than 75 airlines and connected more than 200 destinations in 68 countries around the world. As a result, the airport's infrastructure was considerably expanded as part of the so-called master plan. Today, Vienna Airport (IATA: VIE, ICAO: LOWW) is the home airport of Austrian Airlines and an important base for Ryanair and Wizz Air. With almost 5,000 employees, the airport is also one of Austria's largest employers.

Terminals

Around 2.5 million passengers use Vienna Airport every month. To ensure the fastest possible waiting and transfer times, all travellers are processed in a total of four check-in areas and five gate areas. At the same time, the terminal building houses the airport railway station (level 2), the arrivals hall (level 0), the check-in, departure and security controls (level 1), the arrivals area (levels 2 and 3) and the visitors' terrace (level 4). Although Terminal 3 has a total of 64 counters for the many travellers, it is mainly passengers from Austrian Airlines and numerous Star Alliance members who are processed here. Travellers can also relax here in the fantastic Sky Lounge until the departure of their flight.

Airport City

In the Airport City, travellers can choose from numerous shops and restaurants in a total area of almost 20,000 square metres. From fresh-cut flowers and duty-free goods to fashion, perfumery, pharmaceuticals and spirits, visitors to Vienna Airport will find everything they desire. Waiting passengers can also choose from a variety of first-class restaurants and bars, which offer a varied range of food and drink every day.

Location and how to get there

Vienna Airport is located just 16 kilometres from the centre of Vienna or the Therme Wien spa and can be easily reached by car on the A4 motorway, by bicycle on the fantastic cycle paths and trails or by public transport such as buses and trains. Those arriving by rental car or private vehicle from Vienna's historic centre can make use of several paid parking spaces on site. However, it is advisable to reserve a parking space well in advance. Alternatively, you can reach Vienna Airport using the S-Bahn and the city's regional trains, which run every 30 minutes between the main railway station and the airport. In addition, travellers can use the City-Airport Train (CAT) every half hour without intermediate stops, three Vienna Airport Lines, as well as a paid bus service that runs exclusively on the airport grounds.
