On the banks of the Charente River, the city of Saintes is a lovely city steeped in history. As the capital of the Aquitaine province during ancient times, this city flourished thanks to the trade in products transported by river.

Connected to Lyon by the Via Agrippa, this city long enjoyed a strategic position within the Roman Empire. Although the city declined during the Middle Ages, its status as the capital of Saintonge persisted. It maintained this role until the end of the 19th century.
