Visit Caen

A small agglomeration during the Gallo-Roman era, Caen began to develop in the seventh century. In the 10th century, following the invasions, the duchy of Normandy began to flourish. This position only became stronger under the reign of William the Conqueror, who decided to fully transform the city of Caen. It is indeed there that he decided to establish the seat of his power. For 30 years, the city was under English occupation. The so-called "Norman Athens" was renowned throughout the region up until the industrial era, in 1857. Caen suffered immense damage during the Second World War, with nearly twenty years being needed to rebuild it. Major roads were created after the war to facilitate access to the city center. Haussmannian-styled buildings were constructed.

Rich with over three centuries of history, the Jardin des Plantes will win over the hearts of all nature lovers! There are nearly 8000 floral species spread out over the 5000 m². You can also take advantage of your stay to take a stroll in the Floral Park of the Bird Hill, the Parc Michel d'Ornano, a lovely French garden that was part of the Abbaye-aux-Dames. City-slickers can stroll along the marina and the canal.

Caen’s heritage is very rich: don’t miss the Ducal Castle, which houses theMuseum of Normandy as well as the Museum of Fine Arts. There are also a number of religious buildings such as the Abbaye-aux-Hommes (today the seat of the Town Hall) and the Abbaye-aux-Dames, which houses the tomb of Mathilde of Flanders, the wife of Guillaume the Conqueror. Lastly, the most famous museum in Normandy is probably the Memorial of Caen, which traces the history of the twentieth century and more notably the landing beaches.

Among the major events not to be missed are the Rétrofestival, which brings together every year in June hundreds of exceptional vehicles, and the Nördik Impakt Festival, the festival of electronic and independent cultures in October. Each year, the World Equestrian Games are held in Caen at the end of the summer.
