What to do on the weekend in Milan

Monuments and Events

Milan is the capital of fashion, innovation, and events, but also of history, contemporary art, architecture, and cinema. So, beyond visiting the Duomo and exploring the Navigli, there are countless things to do in Milan over the weekend. If you're heading to the Lombard capital this coming weekend, don’t miss these tips! You might just catch an ongoing event.

Monuments to Visit During Your Weekend in Milan

A weekend in Milan isn’t complete without seeing the main attractions of the historic center. Between an art gallery and a museum, maybe you’ll even have time for a show in one of these monuments.

  • Duomo Terraces: The Milan Cathedral, dedicated to Santa Maria Nascente, is the most important work of Italian Gothic architecture. Its majestic white marble construction makes it the fourth largest church in Europe. Don’t miss the chance to enjoy the panoramic view from the terraces!
  • Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II: Considered one of the first shopping malls in the world, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele is a covered pedestrian street (full of restaurants and shops!) connecting Piazza Duomo to Piazza della Scala.
  • Sforza Castle: Just outside the historic center, Sforza Castle is a fortified complex built in the 15th century by Francesco Sforza. Despite its military past, today it houses numerous museums. Some highlights? The Museum of Ancient Art, the Museum of Musical Instruments, the Prehistory and Protohistory Museum, and the Egyptian Museum.
  • Arco della Pace and Triennale di Milano: After visiting Sforza Castle, enjoy a stroll through Parco Sempione and reach the Arco della Pace on the opposite side, along with the Triennale di Milano, the only Italian institution dedicated to design.
  • Palazzo Reale Milano: From Monet to the world of Disney, Palazzo Reale is the heart of Milan’s exhibition scene. For years it has hosted major art shows featuring the world’s most famous artists.

Milan: An Event for Every Season

Whether it's spring, summer, autumn, or winter, there’s always something happening in Milan! With just a bit of planning, you too can join in the city's seasonal weekend events.

  • Summer: The most anticipated event of summer is definitely the Milan Food Week, hugely popular among tourists from all over Italy. July also brings the Night of the Museums, the Milan Summer Festival, and numerous concerts and open-air shows in the city’s most charming locations.
  • Spring: April is packed with events thanks to the Fuorisalone and the Salone del Mobile, which make up the Milan Design Week, the most important global event for design lovers.
  • Autumn: End your Milanese summer in style! Between September and October, you can experience the Milan Fashion Week, the iconic fashion event where the world's top designers present their latest collections.
  • Winter: In winter, in addition to the opening of the Teatro alla Scala, the Christmas markets kick off (perfect for families with children), along with the Feast of Sant’Ambrogio (December 7).
