Our suggestions for a weekend away in Lille

In the French-Flanders capital you can taste the famous ‘moules-frites’ (mussels and fries), visit the largest flea market in Europe or walk around the renowned Grand’Place or the Fort west of Lille. Both welcoming and dynamic, Lille has shed its industrial image to become one of the most visited cities in France.

Where to eat in Lille

This region in the north of France is known for its many regional and local specialities.

Make the most of your stay in Lille and taste the local produce in one of its many restaurants: bistros and restaurants in the Old Town; our staff can advise you on the best places to eat that will leave a lasting impression of your holiday in the north of France.

From the Beffroi de Lille (Lille Bell Tower) to Fort Vauban, and the Old Stock Exchange to Maison Coilliot, including Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille Cathedral, you’ll discover endless splendours.

Don’t miss the Hospice Comtesse Museum, a former hospital built by the Countess of Flanders in the 13th century, or the Porte de Paris, a historic monumental arch built to commemorate the victories of Louis XIV.

Visiting Lille on foot

A walk through the historic Old Town whilst stopping to try the local speciality sweets known as ‘p’tits quinquins’ is a must. You’ll be immersed in another world when cruising along the Deûle river and enjoying moments of pure relaxation in the Vauban Gardens.

Take the children for a stroll through Lille Zoo, free of charge, and experience the wonders of nature in the heart of the city: With 70 different species, including a white rhino, primates, parrots, reptiles... There are over 250 animals to see. Don’t miss out!

To finish your day in style, go see a show or a concert at the Zénith de Lille. There is a plentiful choice of walks, whether you’re here for a weekend with the family or a business trip.

As a City of Art and History, Lille was influential during the Middle Ages, and it was under the Second Empire that it grew to become a wealthy centre of the textile trade. This historic development is clear in the monuments which are a blend of Roman, Gothic and Classical architecture. We mustn’t forget Fort Vauban, the perfect example of 17th-century military architecture which protected the city for many years and has been designated as a historical monument.

Do you know its defining characteristic? Contrary to other medieval cities that were built around a centre, Lille is made up of a network of small quarters, such as the Old Town or the Faubourg de Béthune.

We can’t talk about this city without mentioning the famous Braderie de Lille. Attracting bargain hunters from all over the world, Europe’s largest flea market takes place every year on the first weekend of September.

However, the rest of the year is also packed, with the Clef de Soleil Festival in June which celebrates music from around the world, the Louche d’Or (Golden Ladle or International Soup Festival) in May and the European Film Festival, which takes place every year at the beginning of spring. No wonder Lille was named European Capital of Culture in 2004!
