During Kempten's time as a dual city, today's Rathausplatz (City Hall Square) was the heart of the imperial city. It served as a marketplace and represented both the economic and social center of the imperial city. Stately patrician buildings on late medieval foundations line the former market street of the imperial city. In 1576, a market fountain was erected in front of the town hall. This was later moved and rebuilt, so that today 1 the 17th-century version with an octagonal stone basin and bronze column can be seen. This environment can be particularly well enjoyed in summer, when the surrounding restaurants serve their guests outdoors, naturally with a view of the historic town hall.
