During Kempten's time as a twin city, today's town hall square was the core of the imperial city. It served as the marketplace and represented both the economic and social center of the imperial city. Stately patrician buildings on a late medieval basis line the former market street of the imperial city. In 1576, a market fountain was erected in front of the town hall. This was later moved and rebuilt, so that today you can see the 17th century version with an octagonal stone basin and bronze column. This environment can be enjoyed especially well in summer, when the surrounding catering establishments serve their outdoor seating, of course with a view of the historic town hall.
