This celebration is one of the most traditional festivals in Spain. Discover the Valencian Fallas and enjoy this unique atmosphere!
Fire and pyrotechnics play a key role in the origin of Las Fallas in Valencia. According to the most popular version, they were started by carpenters who used to burn leftover shavings and useless and unusable junk. They also used to burn the parots that they needed to hang the lamps that gave them light. They did it just before the beginning of spring, because as the days got longer, they no longer needed them. This tradition used to take place in the streets and public squares, putting on a kind of show for the Valencians.
Over the years, that popular pyrotechnics evolved and the Fallas monuments were given shapes. The festivities began to reproduce reprehensible social events, as well as social criticism through their works. This rather satirical and spicy sense of humor did not sit well with all politicians and those in power. Consequently, in 1870, popular festivals such as Las Fallas or Carnival were persecuted. From this attempt to establish censorship, a popular movement arose in defense of traditions. In 1901, the Valencia City Council awarded prizes to the best Fallas assembled for the first time.
Traditionally, Las Fallas begin on March 15 with La Plantà and end on March 19 with La Cremà. The celebration brings together several important events throughout the days. On the day of La Plantà, artists usually take their works and constructions out of the workshops and install them on the streets.
In addition, you can enjoy the illuminated streets from the beginning of the celebrations. Streets full of light, colorful monuments... a truly wonderful and special atmosphere. Generally, there are 6 fallas competing for the prize for the best illuminated street. You can enjoy them from March 6 to March 19.
La Mascletà is one of the favorite shows of Valencians during Las Fallas. It is an act of noise, smoke and color that brings together thousands of tourists and spectators every day, from March 1 to 19.
The Flower Offering is a very popular and well-known act of Las Fallas in Valencia. For only 2 days, the Fallas commissions walk towards the Virgen de los Desamparados with flowers. And they don't do it discreetly, of course! They are dressed in their typical costumes and accompanied by their music band.
At night, you can enjoy the fireworks. They are held for several days, but the schedules can change depending on the events. They are absolutely wonderful, don't miss them!
This act is the last and officially closes Las Fallas. It usually takes place on March 19 and begins with the burning of the children's fallas. The last one is the one in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (Town Hall Square).
