Visit the Picasso Museum in Malaga: history, works, tickets

The Picasso Museum in Malaga is one of the most famous museums in Spain.

It is completely dedicated to the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso, who was born in the city of Malaga in 1881. Pablo Picasso, one of the masters of Cubism and Surrealism of the 20th century, wanted his work to be present in his hometown.

The museum is located in the Buenavista Palace, a historical monument typical of Andalusian architecture. If you visit Malaga, you cannot miss this treasure full of arts and exhibitions. Discover everything about this museum in Spain with us!

The history of the Picasso Museum in Malaga

It all started with the birth of the painter in this city. Pablo Picasso spent the first 10 years of his life in Malaga and the city was always an inspiration to him. In several works, you can see Malaga roots and symbols that remind us of the city in southern Spain.

In 1953, a man named Juan Temboury sent a very special letter to the artist. He asked him to send 2 paintings of his style. Picasso's response was surprising: he wanted to send him 2 trucks full of works. With 2 trucks full, you can already open a museum, right? The only problem: the Franco dictatorship had Picasso as a target, since he was publicly a republican.

When did the museum officially open? Many years later, in 1992. This same year, Christine Ruiz-Picasso, his daughter-in-law, lent a hand to the City Council and offered to donate and lend works for the opening of the museum. Together with the Picasso Museum Foundation and Bernard, his son, he acted to preserve the painter's works. In fact, this was the artist's will: to leave the mark of his Picasso art in his hometown. We can say that it is the most beautiful cultural legacy that an artist can leave, right?

Today, the Picasso Museum in Malaga has thousands and thousands of visitors every year.
