Gran vía

Stay at B&B HOTEL Madrid Centro Puerta del Sol and explore the famous Gran Vía

Gran Vía is one of the most famous and cosmopolitan streets in Madrid for several important reasons. To begin with, it is the most important avenue in the city and crosses the old town from east to west.

Our B&B HOTEL Madrid Centro Puerta del Sol is located, as its name suggests, just 50 meters from Puerta del Sol and 300 meters from the famous Gran Vía. Gran Vía connects the Salamanca and Argüelles neighborhoods and houses shops, restaurants, a casino, the Royal Oratory of the Knight of Grace and some of the most iconic buildings in the capital. It begins on Calle de Alcalá and ends in Plaza de España. And it is divided into three sections: Gran Vía Centro (center), Gran Vía Norte (north) and Gran Vía Sur (south) within the plan of Madrid. This street has been home to many buildings, including palaces and courts. However, nowadays Gran Vía is a commercial street with many shops and restaurants. The northern section presents many of Madrid's tallest buildings, including the Picasso Tower, which was the tallest building in Europe until 2017, when it ceased to be number 1 because the Shard skyscraper in London surpassed it in height.

The most famous boulevard in Madrid

Gran Vía is the most popular boulevard for being one of the old entrances to the capital, oriented to the east, where the sun rises. King Alfonso XIII built it at the beginning of the 20th century and it was a great project for the city. The street became an important part of Madrid's urban development plan. The construction of Gran Vía lasted several decades, works began in 1910 and ended in 1929. For its renovation, more than 300 houses had to be demolished and it affected the cut of almost 50 streets. However, thanks to Gran Vía, better communication between the center of Madrid (Calle Alcalá) and the northwest of the city (Plaza de España) was achieved.

It is a very lively area with countless establishments that you will enjoy during your stay in Madrid. When you arrive at Gran Vía you will find 3 types of businesses: restaurants, fashion stores and cinemas. Although in recent years some of the cinemas have closed and others have been converted into musical theaters. Therefore, the section between Plaza del Callao and Plaza de España received the nickname of "Madrid's Broadway". Gran Vía is one of the nerve centers of Madrid and you can find an atmosphere at any time of the day throughout the year. Some of the most famous buildings on this mythical Madrid street are the Metrópolis Building and the Carrión Building, crowned by the famous Schweppes advertising sign that presides over Plaza de Callao. The section between the San Luis network and Plaza del Callao currently houses a series of very diverse international fashion chains.

Why did Gran Vía receive the nickname "Madrid's Broadway"?

In the heart of Gran Vía and with almost a century of history, theaters such as Lope de Vega, Capitol or Rialto have contributed to this busy Madrid crossing being known as the Spanish Broadway. Gran Vía is, without a doubt, one of the most famous, spectacular and cosmopolitan streets in the city thanks to its inexhaustible offer of leisure, shopping and restaurants, its enormous urban value and the architectural importance of its buildings. The capital has become one of the Spanish cities of cultural pilgrimage par excellence, having a rich offer of musicals. The quantity and especially the quality of these musicals attract all kinds of spectators, which makes the musical offer wide and of international prestige.

These are streets with great pedestrian traffic where it is better to leave the car parked and move on foot to visit its attractions.
