La Concha Beach in San Sebastian

La Concha beach is one of the most famous in Spain and obviously in the Basque Country. It is the most central beach in the city of San Sebastian and is located in the Bay of La Concha. It stands out for its fine golden sand, its green landscape and its great length. Do you want to go for a walk around San Sebastian? In this article, we tell you all about La Concha beach.

The history of La Concha beach

This beach, in addition to being beautiful, is a beach with a great history. In 1945, Queen Elizabeth II's doctors recommended that she go for a swim in the sea on this beach to cure her skin problems. You know how fashion works, right? Due to her frequent appearances in La Concha, many young people followed suit and stayed to sunbathe there. Word of mouth, snowball effect... Result? La Concha beach became an elegant and very fashionable beach in no time. The aristocrats and the royal court made this area one of the most attractive and hyped urban beaches in the world.

An attractive and beautiful beach

This shallow water beach has spectacular views in any season of the year. You can contemplate the green mountains and even a small island from your beach towel. It has white sand, and although its tides can hide it from time to time, it has everything to take unique photos. To this we must add the white and blue striped umbrellas available for rent. They are very symbolic, elegant and represent the flag of San Sebastian.

Have you ever wondered where its name comes from? Well, look, its name and that of the bay come from the shapes the beach has when you look at it from the sky. It looks like a shell, just like that.

In addition, once a year, the beach of San Sebastian hosts a regatta race and brings together thousands of fans on the sand. This event also increased its fame among the Spanish people and foreign tourists.

What is its length and what to do?

La Concha beach is one of the largest beaches, as it is about 1,350 meters long. Its width is 40 meters, but you should know that the tides of the Cantabrian Sea usually change this data. When the tide rises, the usable space of the sand is reduced. That is why we recommend you check the tide forecast before going.

Due to its length, this beach on the coast is one of the best for walking or running with a view of the sea, enjoying the sea air. You can take a walk all year round without any problem. However, since we are in the north of Spain, the ideal temperature is in summer and late spring.

Also, since the bay is surrounded by mountains, visitors do not suffer from wind or strong waves. You can swim peacefully and practice some water sports such as stand up paddle boarding, kayaking or diving.

What to see in the surroundings?

When taking a walk around the surroundings, you will discover many places of interest. You can take a walk through the Miramar Palace Park, for example. It is an English-style palace from which you can enjoy a wonderful view of La Concha Bay.

In addition, La Concha is located right next to other beaches: Ondarreta. So if you want to enjoy different places, you can go there in a short time. Finally, you can visit the island of Santa Clara or the Buen Pastor Cathedral.
